Jack was travelling on Sydney's bus network when he noticed passengers routinely yelling 'back door!' at the driver when the rear exit failed to open - even if they had no intention of getting off themselves. It's a tiny intervention, but one he insists requires a level of confidence he doesn't possess. 'Those people on Sydney buses when the middle door doesn't open and they shout "back door!" - they need a Nobel Peace Prize,' he said in a TikTok video. 'Often people shout it for [others, even when they don't need the door themselves].' Jack said the prospect was particularly intimidating on the busy 333 service between the city and Bondi. 'If I got to my stop and the back door didn't open, you would not catch me shouting "back door!" down the whole bus, especially not the 333. 'I would sit on that bus until it reached Bondi Beach and then cry when I got there, thinking, "How am I getting back to where I'm meant to be?",' he said. A British expat has discovered an unlikely group of Australians he believes deserve far more recognition: the commuters willing to save a stranger from missing their bus stop His confession prompted other commuters to reveal just how far they would go to avoid speaking up. 'Couldn't pay me to do it on the 333,' one said. Another had attempted it once and joked they were still recovering. 'I thought I'd be brave and did it once, had heart palpitations and shakes getting off and not recovered since.' Even worse was the experience of one passenger who finally called out - only for nothing to happen. 'I got ignored once after saying the dreaded 'back door' shout and accepted it and sat back down,' they said. Jack told the Daily Mail he hadn't expected such a mundane part of catching the bus to unite so many people. 'Honestly, it's so true and I can't believe the amount of people bonding in the comments over their traumas on the 333 and experiences on the bus,' he said. 'If I got to my stop and the back door didn't open, you would not catch me shouting "back door!" down the whole bus, especially not the 333,' the expat said 'It seems a lot of us need to develop confidence in shouting back door so we don't end up in the Blue Mountains.' At the other end of the spectrum are the passengers who have appointed themselves unofficial guardians of the rear exit. 'The 333 is my bus. I'm a menopausal woman, so I have no problem shouting out, "BACK DOOR, PLEASE!", whether it's for me or someone else. I'm not here to play,' one woman said. Another commuter recently witnessed a stranger step in when a schoolgirl was about to be taken past her stop. 'A corporate bro screamed it this morning for a school girl who almost missed her stop, very wholesome moment,' they recalled. For one passenger who developed laryngitis, however, no such saviour appeared. They said they stood helplessly at the exit, unable to call out, while everyone else watched. 'No one else did it for me, whole bus watched me stand at that door until the next stop. Like an idiot. Still mortifies me now!' they said. Jack's observation has struck a chord because the situation is so familiar: sometimes the difference between getting off at the right stop and being carried further down the road is simply whether someone on board is willing to speak up The unwritten rules of public transport The response has also highlighted the unwritten etiquette that keeps busy public transport moving - and what happens when passengers are too reluctant to speak up. Beyond giving up priority seats and making room for people to board and exit, commuters often rely on each other when something goes wrong. In Sydney, that can mean alerting a driver when someone is stuck behind a closed door, particularly if the passenger cannot easily call out themselves. But the reluctance to draw attention to yourself on a packed bus appears surprisingly strong - and many said Jack's observation was 'the most relatable culture shock' they'd seen online. One passenger admitted they stayed silent even after realising their driver appeared to be taking the wrong route. Another commuter eventually spoke up and alerted the driver. 'I was just going to see where it took us and get off when I could,' they admitted.
