Bridgeport council approves ordinance seeking home rule to keep local election schedule BRIDGEPORT, W.Va (WDTV) - Bridgeport City Council gave second reading and final approval to an ordinance asking the West Virginia Home Rule Board to let the city opt out of Senate Bill 50. Election schedule request The state law would move municipal elections onto the same calendar as statewide primary and general elections. Bridgeport officials said keeping a separate schedule helps local races stand on their own, rather than getting lost in larger statewide campaigns. Mayor Robert Matheny said the vote clears the way for Bridgeport’s application to be sent to Charleston for review. “Well, tonight the ordinance passed on the second reading, so the application will go to the home rule board, and the home rule board will review that and, you know, make the appropriate decision,” Matheny said. Councilman Chris Kinney said the request is about local control and about making sure decisions about Bridgeport’s election calendar remain in the hands of the community. “We know better what’s right for this municipality,” Kinney said. Clutch House project Council also signed off on the proposed Clutch House at Charles Pointe, a sports-focused lodging and training concept aimed at teams traveling to compete at the Bridge Sports Complex. The project is planned for Daniel Street, between House of Fashion and Mountain State Brewing, adding another piece to the growing mix of recreation, retail and hospitality around Charles Pointe.
