Suella Braverman has pledged to provide interest-free loans for student nurses. The former Conservative home secretary, who defected to Reform UK in January and was given the education, skills and equalities brief, would also lift the cap on medical school places in British universities to end reliance on foreign doctors. The policies, which she announced during her speech at the Reform party conference in Birmingham, are part of a package of measures the party said it would implement during its first 100 days of government. Mrs Braverman has vowed to resign from government if she fails to deliver on her pledges, alongside Richard Tice and Robert Jenrick, who said they would do the same. Reform also said that every school would be required to sing the national anthem, sing great British hymns and fly the Union Flag, if the party were to win power. It wants to cut student loans being issued for so-called “Mickey Mouse” degrees such as gender studies, which Mrs Braverman said would result in a 20 per cent reduction in the number of government loans handed out to students. Instead, loans would only be available for degrees that can demonstrate “high economic returns” for graduates or are judged to be of “strategic or cultural importance”. Money saved from loan reduction would then be used to help fund Reform’s newly announced apprenticeship wage credit worth more than £4,700 per apprentice per year, as well as a £2,000 apprenticeship retention bonus, both of which form part of Reform’s skills revolution. The party has said it wants to see 600,000 people in apprenticeships every year within five years of Reform achieving power. These announcements come amid the country’s “Neet crisis” and a ballooning benefits bill, with one million young people currently not in education, employment or training. Advertisement Speaking at Reform’s biggest-ever national conference, Mrs Braverman stressed her desire to reintroduce a patriotic curriculum into schools and “cut the fat from our universities”. ‘End to higher education financial scam’ Announcing the policies on Saturday afternoon, she said: “If you’re a young person who wants to work hard and care for others, Reform will back you. “If you’re driven by compassion and want to make our NHS the best in the world, Reform is on your side. “And if you want to move forward with your life in a trade or an apprenticeship, or a high-value degree, Reform will support you.” Mrs Braverman added: “We will lift the cap on how many doctors we train, we will fund nursing degrees like never before, and we will remove the rubbish from our university sector to fund a British renaissance of culture and industry. “An end to the higher education financial scam, fixing the disciplinary crisis in our schools, ending the Send emergency, and re-introducing a patriotic curriculum into our classes. “Every single penny saved will be reinvested into our skills revolution.” She said the party would “create a record number of apprenticeships”, fund schools and build medical centres and doctors’ surgeries. “Our continued decline is not inevitable,” she said. “We will do what it takes to salvage this country from this abyss of socialism and the rotten establishment.” Mrs Braverman has previously criticised the Blairite “great university scam” whereby young people are encouraged to take on up to £50,000 of debt to study “pointless subjects at mediocre universities”.
