Doors open at 7 p.m. South Jersey rock and soul guitarist Billy Walton kicks things off, bringing his tribute to soul backed by the full Plaid Salmon horn section. Jones led Booker T. & the M.G.'s. He became a vital part of Stax Records. His contributions helped shape the Memphis sound, earning him a spot in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and a GRAMMY Lifetime Achievement Award. His work spans decades, per Shore Local News. "Green Onions" remains an instrumental classic. But that's just the start. Jones recorded with Wilson Pickett, Sam & Dave, and Aretha Franklin. He played on Otis Redding's "(Sittin' On) The Dock of the Bay." Eddie Floyd's "Knock on Wood" featured his talents. Albert King's 1967 blues masterpiece "Born Under a Bad Sign" bears his mark too. The Memphis musician collaborated with Maurice White of Earth, Wind & Fire. As a player, writer, arranger, and producer, Jones anchored the Memphis recording scene. That work created music people still know and love more than 50 years later. Booker T. & the M.G.'s influence spread far past Memphis. The Blues Brothers films featured their music. Artists across the globe have covered and performed their tracks. Now in his early 80s, Jones still performs with his band. His collaborators read like a who's who of American music: Santana, Bob Dylan, Barbra Streisand, Willie Nelson, and Neil Young. Wednesday's show gives South Jersey audiences a rare opportunity. They can see the Memphis soul legend perform without paying a dime. Billy Walton opens. Then the hall of fame inductee takes the stage, bringing to Atlantic City the sound and songbook that made Memphis soul music part of how America sounds.
