Bonham man celebrates 82nd birthday chasing Guinness World Record BONHAM, Texas (KXII) - Barry Frambes has climbed 5 million stairs at Northside Church of Christ, reaching the milestone on his 82nd birthday. Frambes has been climbing stairs at the church since 2010 in pursuit of the world record for most stairs climbed. “We looked up on Guinness Book of World Records and the current record holder is Brian Davis in the United Kingdom, with a little bit over 2.1 million steps,” Frambes said. Frambes reached his first 500,000 steps in 2012 and continued adding to his total. “I completed 2 million on my 75th birthday by doing 75 flights,” Frambes said. Frambes said he plans to apply for the Guinness World Record now that he has reached 5 million steps. “We were thinking about applying for a Guinness Book of World Records once I reached 5 million,” Frambes said. Frambes said the climbing began as a form of exercise after he retired. “Initially, it was just a matter of exercise. Why do people climb Everest? Because it’s there. Well, the steps are there. So it gave me something to do. I’d retired and never really wanted to be totally inactive,” Frambes said. Frambes said he suffered a broken hip during the 16-year span, but didn’t let it stop him. “During these last 16 years... I had a broken hip at one point and continued to do this afterwards. Had to start basically from a beginning point and go on again,” Frambes said. “But you know, if you give in to pain, you never get anything done. It’s a lot better to work through the pain, continue, and it’s the only way you can get better.” Frambes tracks his progress with tally marks on a chalkboard. He usually starts his day with a 100-flight climb. He reached 5 million stairs on his birthday. “I imagine someday I’ll be walking the stairs and the ceiling will open up and the staircase will just continue and I’ll just keep walking,” Frambes said. “I’m proud of the Lord. He’s given me the strength. I had the determination but he provided the strength and kept me going,” Frambes said. Frambes said his birthday wish was to leave a lasting impact on others. “To make a difference in the world. To be able to leave the world better than I found it in some way,” Frambes said. “It’s individuals that I’m able to impact and try to make a difference in their lives. That makes life worthwhile.” Copyright 2026 KXII. All rights reserved.
