(WCIV) — Charleston fashion is getting a handcrafted twist this Thursday as local brand Block + Ink brings its latest collection to King Street for an exclusive pop-up trunk show. The event, happening Thursday, Aug. 27, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Zach’s Daiquiris, 460 King Street, will allow shoppers to experience the Charleston-based brand’s distinctive shirts and learn more about the centuries-old craftsmanship behind them. Founded by Charlestonian and Southern Charm cast member Whitner Slagsvol, Block + Ink was born from an appreciation for travel, culture and the idea of slowing down and embracing new experiences. Slagsvol was inspired by a trip to India. "A friend of my sister's invited me to a New Year's Eve party in a palace in India," he told News 4. "I felt like Aladdin walking into the palace doors with elephants." It was on that trip where he discovered traditional block printing and saw an opportunity to bring the centuries-old technique into a modern wardrobe. "I came home with a bunch of shirts; people liked them a lot," Slagsvol said. The result is a collection of lightweight, hand-tailored shirts designed for what Block + Ink calls “doers and creators,” people who want to get out, explore and make their own experiences. A centuries-old technique, reimagined What makes Block + Ink stand out is the craftsmanship behind each piece. The brand's shirts are made using an ancient Indian block-printing process. Patterns are stamped onto fabric by hand using carved wooden blocks and organic vegetable dyes. Block + Ink says its dyes can include natural materials such as mango leaves, indigo flower and turmeric powder. Because the process is done by hand, no two pieces are exactly alike. The brand's designs are made to be versatile, too. As Slagsvol explains, the shirts are easy to dress up or dress down, making them a natural fit for Charleston's laid-back but polished style. Block + Ink describes its mission as creating clothing that encourages people to “live life slow,” while combining comfort, individuality and a sense of adventure.
