Betsy “Lynn” Coppersmith, age 75, passed away peacefully on August 31, 2026, in Nags Head with her daughter by her side. She was born in Charlotte, NC on June 22, 1951, to the late Wallace Ray Trexler and the late Dora Bates Trexler.
Lynn will forever be remembered as a loving and devoted mother, proud grandmother, dear friend, talented artist, deep thinker, and a pure soul. She is survived by her daughter, Emily Coppersmith; her grandson, Jonah Baum; her former husband and Emily’s father, Buddy Coppersmith; her sister, Jane T. Frye (Jeff); her nieces, nephews, and many cousins.
In addition to her parents, Lynn was preceded in death by her brother, Wallace “Ray” Trexler Jr.
Lynn earned a bachelor’s degree in art from East Carolina University, specializing in printmaking. During college, she took a semester off to backpack through Europe, developing the free-spirited curiosity and independence that she carried with her throughout her life. Lynn moved to the Outer Banks after graduating and worked at the Jolly Roger, where she made lifelong friends.
In 1991, using her art background and experience working for a local surveying firm, Lynn started her own business, First Flight Design. For almost two decades, she collaborated with numerous builders to design homes for many of the area’s major subdivisions. Long after the industry had transitioned to CAD, Lynn continued to spend tireless hours standing over her drafting table to deliver the hand-drawn blueprints preferred by her clients. This commitment to do-it-yourself artisanship extended to her many hobbies and talents. She retired to Cape Canaveral, FL in 2008 for the year-round warm weather and sunshine.
Truly an artist at heart, Lynn channeled her creativity into every aspect of her life. She appreciated the uniqueness and endearing imperfection of anything handcrafted and, in addition to her paintings, loved to make cards, jewelry, toys, and other thoughtful gifts for family and friends. Lynn inherited a green thumb and admiration of nature from her father, along with a talent for sewing and a love for music from her mother. She attended many concerts over the years and assembled an impressive record collection, but the Beatles and the Rolling Stones would always be her favorites.
Soft-spoken but passionate, Lynn was an ardent supporter of equality, civil rights, and humanitarianism. She believed in the importance of unwavering kindness and honesty and was the rare type of individual whose outward actions were always aligned with her inner values. While deeply introspective, Lynn was also inquisitive about the world around her. She was a lifelong learner and avid reader, with many interests including history, wildlife, genealogy, and astronomy. Lynn was always diligent about keeping up with current events, politics, and the latest breakthroughs in scientific research.
The family gratefully acknowledges JoAnn and Allen Marshall for their friendship and support during Lynn’s time in Florida, including the extensive assistance with her move back to North Carolina. They would also like to thank the Albemarle Hospice team, the Hospice of Health First team in Brevard County, and the nurses, caregivers and staff at Peak Resources, all of whom provided Lynn with comfort and dignity during her last year of life.
A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. Details are pending and will be updated here once they are available. Family and friends will gather to honor Lynn’s memory and the profound impact she had on their lives. Her spirit will continue to live on in the hearts of those who loved her.
Twiford Funeral Homes, Outer Banks, 500 Budleigh Street, Manteo, NC, is honored to assist the Coppersmith family. Condolences and memories may be shared on Lynn’s obituary page at www.TwifordFH.com.
