I ranked mayonnaise from Aldi, M&S, Tesco and more — Hellmann's isn't first
I tested Hellmann's against six UK supermarket own-brand versions – including Asda, Tesco and Sainsbury's – to find the best
Senior Spare Time Journalist
Mayonnaise is a kitchen essential found in homes across Wales. It can elevate sandwiches, work as an accompaniment for chips, and be dolloped onto salads.
There's certainly no lack of choice when purchasing a bottle of mayonnaise. Both branded and supermarket own-label varieties line the shelves, as most UK retailers stock their own version.
Hellmann's is a well-known mayonnaise brand, though supermarket own-brand alternatives typically cost less. I set out to discover whether any of the own-label products could match Hellmann's in terms of both flavour and price. I sampled mayonnaise from Aldi, Lidl, Sainsbury's, Asda, Tesco and Marks and Spencer. The findings proved quite surprising.
Tesco - 86p
Coming in last place was Tesco, as something wasn't quite right about its flavour. In my view, it was excessively vinegary, and that completely dominated everything else.
Rating: 2/10
Lidl - 95p
Lidl's version was the whitest of the selection and had a sour taste. While being pleasantly creamy, it didn't have enough flavour, which proved to be its downfall.
Rating: 3/10
Sainsbury's - 89p
This mayonnaise was the thickest in the comparison and notably pale in colour. It had a satisfying strength and taste, making it ideally suited for anyone wanting a thick mayonnaise to dress salads.
Rating: 6/10
Hellmann's - £2.75 from Tesco
The branded favourite is a widely adored condiment for a reason. It is wonderfully creamy with a lovely balance between sweetness and tanginess. The sauce also boasts an excellent consistency.
Rating: 8/10
Aldi - 95p
In my view, Aldi's mayonnaise was impossible to tell apart in taste from Hellmann's. It delivered the same creamy depth and perfectly balanced flavour. The condiment offers a superb option for those looking for a more wallet-friendly alternative to the branded variety.
Rating: 8/10
Marks and Spencer - £1.20
Coming in second was Marks and Spencer with the most expensive own-brand option. This condiment had a distinctly different taste from the others in the test, though in a pleasant way. It was noticeably light and airy, with a lovely tang and smoothness. If you favour a lighter mayonnaise that isn't excessively thick, this is certainly the best choice.
Rating: 9/10

Asda - 96p
Taking first place was Asda. The colour, richness and velvety consistency distinguished it from the rest. It offered a pleasing tang that you'd anticipate from a good-quality mayonnaise and will have you grabbing chips to dip straight in. In my opinion, the taste was perfect, and it costs significantly less than Hellmann's, making it a clear champion.
Rating: 10/10
