«Человек-шептуха» и другие фильмы о серийных убийцах: сравнительный обзор

This article contains spoilers for The Whisper Man. Michael Keaton's latest crime thriller, The Whisper Man, does a lot of things right. It kicks off with an interesting premise: Garreton police officials suspect a recent child abduction is connected to the incarcerated serial killer, the Whisper Man. When Tom and his young son Jake move to town, they quickly find themselves victims of the next crime. With creepy children's rhymes, imaginary friends, and taunting voice recordings, The Whisper Man quickly sets up a chilling missing-child mystery and a few disturbing twists. As dark as The Whisper Man can be, it's far from the most disturbing serial killer movie out there, which is great news for anyone who felt the 2026 film's predictable plot left them wanting something more. With real-world brutality, psychological horror, and a genuinely fresh exploration of the serial killer movie formula, these films will get under your skin far more than The Whisper Man. 5 There's No Safety in Clovehitch Killer The Clovehitch Killer takes one of the most disturbing ideas imaginable and places it inside an ordinary American family. The movie follows teenager Tyler, who begins to suspect that his seemingly normal, respectable father may actually be the serial killer responsible for a string of unsolved, 10-year-old murders. It's a particularly bone-chilling premise because Tyler isn't investigating a dangerous stranger; he's questioning whether the person he trusts most could've been hiding an unimaginable secret all these years. That gives The Clovehitch Killer a different kind of unease from The Whisper Man, but there are still familial ties evident in both stories. While The Whisper Man excelled in some particularly creepy shots, specifically the surgical gloves creeping through Tom's letterbox, The Clovehitch Killer excels with something much more sinister: the idea that a potential monster is sitting at the dinner table with you. It's a quieter thriller than other movies on this list, but it's still exceptionally effective because it focuses on a horrifying possibility as much as a horrifying reality. 4 The Black Phone Puts the Viewer in Finney's Shoes Like The Whisper Man, The Black Phone understands that there are few things scarier than a child being targeted by a seemingly unstoppable killer. Scott Derrickson's horror movie centers on Finney, a young boy who is kidnapped by a masked murderer (known as the Grabber) and locked inside a soundproof basement. The Grabber's mask, crimes, and unpredictable behavior put Finney in a genuinely grim situation, but an old black telephone gives him a chance at survival. There are some scary moments in The Black Phone, and its supernatural element gives it an edge over straightforward serial killer thrillers. The Grabber is already terrifying because of what he does to his victims, but the movie surrounds him with an increasingly nightmarish atmosphere as Finney attempts to survive. Perhaps the biggest reason The Black Phone is more disturbing than The Whisper Man is that the latter uses the idea of a killer to create unease, whereas Derrickson's film places viewers directly in that nightmare while refusing to break away from Finney's horrifying situation. 3 It's Physically Uncomfortable to Watch Prisoners Prisoners also centers on a missing-child premise, like The Whisper Man, but pushes its moral consequences much, much further to a point where it's physically uncomfortable to be a viewer at times. While their families are hanging out for Thanksgiving, Anna Dover and Joy Birch go missing, and Keller Dover becomes increasingly convinced that the police are failing to do their jobs properly. As his desperation grows, Keller takes matters into his own hands and crosses disturbing moral lines in the hopes of finding out where the girls are. Unlike with most serial killer movies, audiences are just as invested in finding out where the girls are being kept as they are in finding out how far an ordinary person will go to find them. Prisoners repeatedly asks viewers, "How far is too far?" while offering an inexplicably bleak examination of fear, vengeance, and justice. The Whisper Man begins to touch on some of these ideas when Tom decides to investigate Jake's disappearance with his father, but it's not nearly as disturbing or ugly as what Prisoners does with its characters. 2 The Chaser is Heartbreakingly Bleak The Chaser is a relentlessly bleak South Korean thriller, and it wastes very little time. The film follows Joong-ho, a former detective-turned-pimp who realizes that several of his sex workers have gone missing after being sent to the same customer. His search eventually leads him to a serial killer, but catching the murderer is only the beginning of a long-lasting nightmare. Na Hong-jin's movie is particularly cruel to its viewers; it repeatedly creates the possibility that things might turn around, only to snatch that hope away again. With a horrifyingly casual murderer and numerous opportunities to stop him slipping away, The Chaser is easily one of the least formulaic serial killer movies out there. Where The Whisper Man builds suspense around the mystery of its killer, The Chaser turns the knowledge that a monster is already loose into an unbearable source of tension. It evolves from a gritty cat-and-mouse chase into a genuinely upsetting watch. 1 Sinister Makes You Feel Like You're Being Watched There's something uniquely horrible about Sinister. True crime writer Ellison Oswalt thinks he's finally found the material that will turn his next book into a bestseller when he discovers a box of Super 8 films showing several families being murdered. Instead of immediately going to the police, he watches them, studies them, and becomes obsessed with figuring out what connects the killings. Ellison's horrible decision only feels worse from there, especially once Sinister reveals that the films are more than just evidence of past crimes. The movie also makes the audience sit with images that should've never been recorded in the first place, while Ellison's fascination with them only serves to put his family in more and more danger. There is a supernatural element behind Sinister, but the film is at its best with its simpler parts: grainy home movies, children behaving strangely, and the realization that someone has been deliberately documenting these atrocities. It not only makes you feel like you're being watched, but it also blends encompassing dread with psychological panic. The Whisper Man has a creepy premise, and the tape recordings in the Netflix film feel like a restrained version of what's going on in Sinister. However, The Whisper Man heads to a classic open-and-shut case format, whereas the 2012 movie takes things to a much more disturbing place.
