Сэм Рокуэлл: топ-3 лучших научно-фантастических фильмов актера

Should Sam Rockwell's name ever turn up in the opening credits of a movie, you're guaranteed to have a good performance on your hands. The Oscar-winning actor has delivered remarkable performances over the years, with highlights including "Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri" (for which he won the award), great coming-of-age comedy, "The Way Way Back," and what many would consider his breakthrough appearance in "The Green Mile." It's with a wild batch of roles like that that he's left us loving, loathing, and, on occasion, envying his incredible footwork. While he's mostly been recognized for his turns in dramas and comedies, a lot of Rockwell's career has been aided by his brief stints in sci-fi. From mainstream blockbusters to cult classics, Rockwell has managed to be the consistent highlight of them all, and we've got five films from the genre that absolutely deserve to be added to your watchlist. Some of the movies we've highlighted helped build the career he has now, while others were average watches that improved simply by having him in them. If you like superhero sequels, time-travel movies, or underrated sci-fi comedies, Rockwell has done it all and more. But which is the best of the bunch? Have a look at our ranking and find out for yourself, beginning with his short-lived stint as a supervillain in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. 5. Iron Man 2 For a lot of Marvel fans, "Iron Man 2" might sit in the bottom half of their favorite entries in the franchise. It sets a frustrating trend of trying to weave in a variety of threads that link to other parts of the MCU, while struggling to stand on its own. With that said, there are some perks. That suitcase that's heavy on the "suit" part still holds up, and the introduction to Scarlett Johansson as Natasha Romanoff, aka Black Widow, is still awesome. It also gives Rockwell a great platform to show his stuff, which was well established by this point, as superbly smug tech bro Justin Hammer. While Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) was suffering for the sins of his father with the arrival of Whiplash (Mickey Rourke), Rockwell's Hammer chews up any scene he's in. Just like it's hard to draw the line between Stark and Downey, the task is equally difficult for Rockwell and Hammer. It almost makes you mildly grateful that while he hasn't made an appearance in an MCU movie since, he's at least turned up elsewhere in one-shots like "All Hail the King" and lent his voice talents to "What If?" The Marvel Cinematic Universe has become known for completely ruining some of its best characters, but if Hammer is still present somewhere, there's a chance that they could remind audiences just how good Rockwell is and how his stint as a smarmy businessman was one that should be fondly remembered. 4. The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy The cast list for Garth Jennings' adaptation of "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" is as bonkers as the travel guide it's taking from. Martin Freeman, Mos Def, Zooey Deschanel and Alan Rickman all head off into the great unknown after Earth is destroyed to make way for a new hyperspace bypass. On their travels, they come across the newly appointed President of the Galaxy, Zaphod Beeblebrox, played by an amazingly unhinged Rockwell. A sci-fi comedy that you can either love or hate depending on how familiar you are with Douglas Adams' beloved sci-fi story, "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy," does have some great moments, and most have Rockwell at the center as the moronic galactic political figure who doesn't have a clue how to run the place. This is a great example of Rockwell's taste for the unhinged, out-of-control comedy we'd see in his later years, and he works wonders here. The movie might not have landed as well with U.S. audiences thanks to the British humor, but for Rockwell dabbling in this kind of classic British comedy, he comes out shining by the end of it. See it, if only to witness Mos Def sharing the screen with a robot that sounds like Severus Snape. 3. Galaxy Quest "Galaxy Quest" shouldn't really rank up this high among Rockwell's sci-fi movie efforts. He's a secondary character, and the film knows it. In this meta-comedy about the washed up cast of a "Star Trek"-esque TV show being kidnapped by aliens who believe they're the real deal, Rockwell plays Guy Fleegman, an extra from the original series who was essentially a redshirt, waiting to be killed before the heroes save the day. As a result, this already terrified actor who's been abducted into action fears for his life, given how short it was in the show. Rockwell's Fleegman, aka Crewman Number Six, is used sparingly, and when he does appear, it's absolutely perfect. Closer to the risk of death than Jason Nesmith (Tim Allen), Gwen DeMarco (Sigourney Weaver in one of her best sci-fi roles outside of the "Alien" movies), and Sir Alexander Dane (the effortlessly brilliant Alan Rickman), he feels like the jittery punchline of every joke he's included in and adds to the meta magic of this "Star Trek" movie that isn't one (even if it's ranked as the seventh-best by some fans). It's another great testament to Rockwell having brilliant comedic timing in the early half of his career, and also happens to be one of the most underappreciated sci-fi comedies ever made. Given the decades of teasing regarding a "Galaxy Quest" sequel, we can only hope that if the cast does reunite, Rockwell gets promoted in some capacity to the level we know he deserves. 2. Good Luck, Have Fun, Don't Die One of the best Sam Rockwell sci-fi movies is the kind barely anyone saw, and this one only came out a year ago. "Good Luck, Have Fun, Don't Die" feels like an amalgamation of sci-fi cult classics, wired into somewhere between "12 Monkeys" and "The Terminator." Rockwell plays a Man From the Future, who storms into a restaurant demanding the help of a band of strangers to join him in his fight against artificial intelligence. Directed by "Pirates of the Caribbean" helmsman Gore Verbinski, there's no doubt that "Good Luck, Have Fun, Don't Die" is an ensemble piece, with all of Rockwell's saviors of the future having their own story to tell before this fateful night. There's no question, though, that only his sharp, borderline bonkers take on a time-traveling hero keeps the film together, even if he looks like he walked straight out of a dumpster from a backdrop in "Blade Runner." Rockwell's frenetic energy also fits a sci-fi movie that covers every concern about the state of modern technology and the looming threat of artificial intelligence. Throwing in clones, ray guns, and a a giant cat made of kittens, "Good Luck, Have Fun, Don't Die" would actually be a lot funnier if it wasn't so close to current events. Anyway, give it a watch and do as the title says, while appreciating a brilliant tour guide in the form of Rockwell acting like a futuristic hobo. 1. Moon Well, there was no other option really, was there? There's no denying that, for the last two decades, "Moon" is clearly the best sci-fi film Rockwell put his name to. A harrowing tale of isolation and holding onto one's identity, the movie was a groundbreaking one not just for Rockwell but also for director Duncan Jones in what remains his best project. Rockwell plays lone astronaut Sam Bell, who's reaching the final two weeks of his three-year stint on the moon, only for his lone mission to reveal dark and mind-breaking discoveries that have him fearful of a life that's been loaded with lies. Entering the same atmosphere as "2001: A Space Odyssey" and "Sunshine," "Moon" effectively manages to make its mark as one of the best sci-fi movies of the 2000s, with most, if not all, of the credit going to Rockwell. Struggling with the loneliness of space, his time with himself is made all the more compelling when different versions of him appear, revealing just what kind of mission he's been on. The further down this rabbit hole he goes, the more harrowing the film becomes, demonstrating without a doubt that Rockwell has the acting chops to hold his own whether it's opposite A-list stars or even several other incarnations of Sam Rockwell. Give this a watch if you've been unfortunate enough to go this long without it. You're in for a one-man show like no other.
