Легенды Бродвея: как Этель Мерман, Лиза Миннелли и Майкл Кроуфорд создавали вечные голоса мюзиклов

Broadway has given the world some of the most unforgettable voices in entertainment, performers who can turn a single song into a moment of pure theatrical magic. From commanding leading roles and heartbreaking ballads to explosive showstoppers that bring audiences to their feet, the greatest Broadway singers combine vocal power with acting, personality, and emotional precision. Their signature performances have helped define legendary musicals, introduced timeless songs to new generations, and inspired countless performers to dream of the stage. Whether delivering a quiet confession or filling a theater with a soaring finale, these celebrated voices represent the extraordinary artistry that makes Broadway unlike anything else. 1. Ethel Merman Ethel Merman is one of the foundational voices of Broadway, a performer whose enormous sound, brilliant diction, comic instinct, and fearless personality helped define the classic American musical. Long before sophisticated amplification became standard in theaters, Merman could send her voice soaring to the back of the house with remarkable clarity. Her Broadway career became inseparable from some of the greatest composers of the twentieth century, including George Gershwin, Cole Porter, Irving Berlin, and Jule Styne. One of her earliest triumphs came with I Got Rhythm in Girl Crazy, a song whose rhythmic vitality perfectly suited her commanding delivery. She later became identified with Cole Porter favorites such as You’re the Top, I Get a Kick Out of You, and Blow, Gabriel, Blow, all of which gave her opportunities to combine vocal power with comic confidence. Merman’s association with Irving Berlin produced another collection of theatrical standards. As Annie Oakley in Annie Get Your Gun, she introduced There’s No Business Like Show Business, Anything You Can Do, and I Got the Sun in the Morning. Yet perhaps no role captured her unique abilities more completely than Rose in Gypsy. Everything’s Coming Up Roses became one of Broadway’s great expressions of relentless ambition, while Rose’s Turn allowed Merman to reveal the frustration and emotional hunger beneath the character’s overwhelming personality. Her singing was never delicate in the conventional sense, but it possessed tremendous precision. Every lyric reached the audience, every joke landed, and every major musical phrase carried dramatic purpose. Merman represented an era when a Broadway singer needed enough individuality to make a theater feel smaller simply by stepping onto the stage. Her signature songs remain standards because they seem permanently connected to the unforgettable force of the woman who first gave them life. 2. Barbra Streisand Barbra Streisand arrived on Broadway with a voice so individual that audiences could recognize her within a few notes. She combined extraordinary breath control, dramatic phrasing, comic timing, and a remarkable ability to make a lyric sound deeply personal. Her early appearance in I Can Get It for You Wholesale attracted considerable attention, but Funny Girl transformed her into a genuine theatrical phenomenon. As Fanny Brice, Streisand found a role perfectly suited to her combination of vulnerability, wit, ambition, and vocal brilliance. I’m the Greatest Star became a declaration of confidence from a performer whose character knows she belongs in the spotlight even before the world agrees. People revealed the warmer and more reflective side of her voice, allowing long melodic phrases to unfold with extraordinary emotional control. The definitive Streisand Broadway number is Don’t Rain on My Parade. The song builds continuously, giving the singer almost no opportunity to retreat once the performance begins. Streisand attacks it with rhythmic precision and increasing intensity, turning Fanny’s determination into one of the great declarations of independence in musical theater. She later returned to classic Broadway material throughout her recording career, interpreting songs by Stephen Sondheim, Richard Rodgers, Leonard Bernstein, Andrew Lloyd Webber, and many others. Her versions of Somewhere, Send in the Clowns, and Memory demonstrate how effectively she can reshape familiar theater songs around her own phrasing. Streisand has always possessed the rare ability to sound technically accomplished without allowing technique to become the entire point. Her voice can be intimate, humorous, defiant, romantic, or grand, sometimes within the same song. Although her career expanded enormously into film, recording, directing, and concert performance, Broadway provided the setting for her first great artistic breakthrough. Her theatrical singing remains a model of how vocal command and character interpretation can become completely inseparable. 3. Julie Andrews Julie Andrews brought crystalline diction, exceptional pitch, elegance, and an unmistakably luminous soprano to musical theater. Her professional career began when she was remarkably young, and her unusually developed vocal technique soon made her a natural fit for demanding stage material. Broadway audiences embraced her as Polly Browne in The Boy Friend, but her performance as Eliza Doolittle in My Fair Lady established her as a major theatrical star. Songs such as Wouldn’t It Be Loverly, Just You Wait, and I Could Have Danced All Night allowed Andrews to move from character driven humor to glorious lyrical singing. I Could Have Danced All Night in particular became one of her defining songs, its rising melody ideally matched to the clarity and buoyancy of her voice. Andrews followed that triumph with another significant Broadway role as Queen Guenevere in Camelot. The Simple Joys of Maidenhood revealed her comic intelligence, while Before I Gaze at You Again showcased the graceful legato that made her singing so distinctive. Her film musicals expanded her popularity even further. Mary Poppins gave her A Spoonful of Sugar, Stay Awake, and the beautiful Feed the Birds. Then The Sound of Music provided an extraordinary collection of songs, including the title number, My Favorite Things, Do Re Mi, and Something Good. Andrews could sing technically difficult music with such ease that listeners sometimes overlooked the discipline behind it. Her phrasing remained natural, her words were always understandable, and her tone possessed a brightness that communicated optimism without becoming superficial. Even after vocal surgery altered her singing career, her connection to musical theater remained profound. Julie Andrews represents a style of Broadway singing built on musicianship, storytelling, precision, and seemingly effortless grace. 4. Patti LuPone Patti LuPone is one of Broadway’s great dramatic singers, a performer whose voice carries urgency, authority, vulnerability, and an unmistakable theatrical bite. Her performances rarely feel like polished vocal displays detached from character. LuPone sings as though the emotional stakes of the scene are happening to her in real time. Her breakthrough came as Eva Perón in the original Broadway production of Evita. The score placed extraordinary demands on its leading performer, requiring sustained power, dramatic control, and the ability to move between private vulnerability and public command. Don’t Cry for Me Argentina became LuPone’s defining early number, and her interpretation balances political theater with a surprisingly intimate emotional core. A New Argentina revealed the harder, more explosive side of her voice. LuPone later became closely associated with Stephen Sondheim’s work. Her performance as Mrs. Lovett in Sweeney Todd demonstrated her sharp comic instincts in songs such as The Worst Pies in London and A Little Priest. As Rose in Gypsy, she delivered Everything’s Coming Up Roses and Rose’s Turn with ferocious intensity, making the character’s ambition and emotional desperation impossible to separate. LuPone also left a strong mark on Anything Goes, where the title song gave her a chance to combine classic Broadway swagger with a powerful belt. Decades later, her performance of The Ladies Who Lunch in Company became another major theatrical moment, revealing how effectively she could dominate a scene through timing and attitude rather than sheer volume. LuPone’s distinctive diction and vocal production have inspired endless discussion, but individuality is precisely what makes her important. Nobody mistakes her for another singer. She delivers Broadway songs with conviction so absolute that even familiar material can suddenly feel dangerous and immediate. 5. Bernadette Peters Bernadette Peters has spent decades demonstrating that Broadway singing can be technically refined, dramatically intelligent, playful, sensual, and devastatingly vulnerable. Her voice has a distinctive shimmering quality, with a light vibrato and expressive upper register that immediately separates her from conventional theatrical belters. Peters became one of the most important interpreters of Stephen Sondheim’s music, largely because she understands that his songs depend upon thought as much as sound. In Sunday in the Park with George, she originated the role of Dot opposite Mandy Patinkin. Move On became one of the show’s emotional peaks, and Peters brings warmth and clarity to lyrics concerned with art, connection, sacrifice, and the courage required to continue creating. Her performance as the Witch in Into the Woods revealed another dimension of her talent. Stay with Me combines maternal desperation with anger, while Last Midnight allows Peters to unleash theatrical force without losing the character’s complexity. She later took on Rose in Gypsy, interpreting Everything’s Coming Up Roses and Rose’s Turn from a very different emotional perspective than earlier performers. Her return to Sondheim in A Little Night Music gave her the chance to sing Send in the Clowns, a song that rewards subtle acting more than vocal display. Peters approaches it with painful restraint, allowing pauses and changes of color to reveal thoughts the character cannot quite express directly. Her Broadway credits also include Song and Dance, Annie Get Your Gun, and Hello, Dolly!, each demonstrating a different side of her stage personality. Peters has never relied on one vocal trick or theatrical persona. Her finest performances feel carefully considered yet spontaneous, making her one of Broadway’s most enduring interpreters of sophisticated musical storytelling. 6. Idina Menzel Idina Menzel became one of the defining Broadway voices of her generation through a combination of emotional directness, distinctive tone, and a powerful upper register built for contemporary musical theater. She first attracted major attention as Maureen in the original Broadway production of Rent. The role required enormous personality, and Over the Moon gave Menzel a theatrical showcase filled with humor, provocation, and unconventional musical ideas. Yet her association with Wicked transformed her into an international musical theater icon. As Elphaba, Menzel found a character whose emotional journey perfectly matched her ability to move from introspection to explosive release. The Wizard and I begins in youthful hope and expands toward thrilling ambition, giving an early glimpse of the vocal force that will define the role. Defying Gravity became Menzel’s signature Broadway song and one of the most recognizable theater numbers of the twenty first century. The song gradually strips Elphaba of uncertainty as she decides to reject expectations and trust her own convictions. Menzel’s climactic phrases became inseparable from the character, creating a moment that countless young singers have attempted to reproduce. No Good Deed shows the darker side of Elphaba, demanding aggression and despair rather than straightforward triumph. Menzel later appeared in If Then, introducing songs such as Always Starting Over, which gave her another opportunity to combine contemporary Broadway writing with emotionally charged vocals. Her recording career and performance of Let It Go in Disney’s Frozen expanded her audience far beyond theater, but Broadway remains central to her artistic identity. Menzel’s voice is not anonymous or overly polished. It contains grain, intensity, and personality, qualities that make emotional peaks feel genuinely earned. Her greatest performances embody the modern Broadway ideal of storytelling through a powerful contemporary vocal sound. 7. Audra McDonald Audra McDonald possesses one of the most technically accomplished and stylistically versatile voices ever associated with Broadway. Classically trained yet completely at home in musical theater, she can move between operatic richness, intimate speech inspired phrasing, jazz influenced color, and powerful theatrical expression without losing her distinctive identity. Her Broadway career has encompassed an extraordinary range of material. In Carousel, she brought tenderness and dramatic intelligence to Carrie Pipperidge, while Ragtime allowed her to create the role of Sarah, whose music contains some of the score’s most emotionally devastating passages. Your Daddy’s Son became a particularly memorable showcase, requiring the singer to communicate grief, memory, love, and unbearable regret within a single scene. McDonald’s performance as Bess in The Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess offered another magnificent demonstration of her range. Summertime is one of the most frequently performed songs in American music, which makes finding a fresh interpretation extremely difficult. McDonald approaches it with exceptional tonal control while preserving the lullaby quality at its center. Her Broadway work has also included Master Class, A Raisin in the Sun, 110 in the Shade, and Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar and Grill. In the latter, she transformed her naturally polished voice to evoke Billie Holiday without reducing the performance to simple imitation. That commitment to character illustrates what makes McDonald exceptional. Technique gives her enormous freedom, but technique is never the final destination. She uses it to serve language and drama. Her concert repertory extends from classic Broadway songs to contemporary composers, and performances of pieces such as Climb Ev’ry Mountain and I Could Have Danced All Night demonstrate extraordinary command. McDonald represents Broadway singing at its most complete, combining musicianship, intelligence, vocal beauty, and fearless acting. 8. Angela Lansbury Angela Lansbury became a Broadway legend not because she possessed the largest voice of her era, but because she understood exactly how singing, acting, timing, and personality could combine into unforgettable musical theater. Already an accomplished film performer before becoming a Broadway star, Lansbury found one of her defining roles in Mame. The title character required sophistication, warmth, humor, and enough theatrical authority to dominate an enormous musical. It’s Today captures Mame’s refusal to live cautiously, while Open a New Window expresses the character’s philosophy of embracing experience. Bosom Buddies, performed with Beatrice Arthur, became one of Broadway’s classic comic duets because both women understood how affection and insult could coexist within the same perfectly timed exchange. Lansbury’s greatest musical theater achievement may be her portrayal of Mrs. Lovett in Stephen Sondheim’s Sweeney Todd. The role demanded rapid lyrics, dark comedy, emotional complexity, and a willingness to find humor inside horrifying circumstances. The Worst Pies in London introduces Mrs. Lovett through a torrent of complaints and observations, and Lansbury’s diction turns every word into character information. A Little Priest, her celebrated duet with Len Cariou, requires extraordinarily precise comic timing as the characters imagine increasingly elaborate possibilities for their gruesome business. Lansbury also triumphed in Dear World and later played Rose in Gypsy, proving that she could handle material traditionally associated with stronger belting voices through intelligence and dramatic force. Her musical performance as Mrs. Potts in the film Beauty and the Beast introduced another generation to the warmth of her singing through the title song. Lansbury’s Broadway legacy demonstrates that great musical theater singing is fundamentally about storytelling. She could make a lyric funny, touching, sinister, or deeply human simply through the way she placed a word. 9. Liza Minnelli Liza Minnelli is one of the supreme theatrical entertainers of modern popular culture, combining a powerful voice with extraordinary rhythmic instinct, emotional openness, and total commitment to performance. Although her fame spans concerts, television, recordings, and film, Broadway played a crucial role in establishing her identity separate from the enormous legacy of her mother, Judy Garland. Minnelli won early acclaim in Flora the Red Menace, collaborating with composer John Kander and lyricist Fred Ebb, who would become enormously important figures in her career. Songs such as A Quiet Thing demonstrated that Minnelli could communicate vulnerability with surprising restraint, despite later becoming famous for a much larger theatrical style. Her association with Cabaret created some of the most enduring performances of her career. As Sally Bowles in the film adaptation, Minnelli turned Maybe This Time into a heartbreaking mixture of hope and desperation. Mein Herr displayed her rhythmic precision and ability to merge singing with physical performance, while the title song Cabaret became her ultimate statement of theatrical defiance. Minnelli sings it with brightness on the surface, yet the surrounding story gives the celebration a darker meaning. Her concert special Liza with a Z further established her as an electrifying live performer, with numbers requiring stamina, dance ability, and exceptional command of an audience. She later appeared on Broadway in productions including The Act, where songs such as City Lights allowed her to display the full force of her stage personality. Minnelli’s voice has always carried emotion very close to the surface. She does not merely deliver a song cleanly. She throws herself into it, using gesture, phrasing, dynamics, and sheer personality to make the audience experience the number alongside her. That intensity made Liza Minnelli one of Broadway’s great show business originals. 10. Lea Salonga Lea Salonga became an international Broadway star through a voice celebrated for its purity, control, emotional clarity, and beautifully precise diction. Born in the Philippines, Salonga had already accumulated substantial performing experience before earning worldwide recognition as Kim in Miss Saigon. The role demanded exceptional dramatic stamina, taking Kim from youthful innocence through war, separation, motherhood, and sacrifice. I’d Give My Life for You became one of Salonga’s defining performances, allowing her to build from tenderness into fierce determination without sacrificing the natural beauty of her voice. Sun and Moon revealed her lyrical warmth, while the more emotionally intense scenes demonstrated the strength beneath her polished sound. Salonga later became closely associated with Les Misérables, particularly through the role of Éponine. On My Own is one of musical theater’s great songs of unreturned love, and Salonga’s interpretation became internationally admired for its balance of technical control and emotional directness. She does not force the sadness. Instead, she allows the melody and lyric to unfold naturally until the loneliness becomes overwhelming. Salonga later returned to Les Misérables as Fantine, bringing mature dramatic depth to I Dreamed a Dream. Her Broadway career has also included Flower Drum Song, Allegiance, and Once on This Island, demonstrating her versatility across very different musical styles. Beyond Broadway, her singing voices for Jasmine in Aladdin and Mulan introduced her to generations of listeners through A Whole New World and Reflection. Salonga’s technique is notable because it rarely calls attention to itself. Her breath support, pitch, and diction create a feeling of ease that allows the emotional story to remain central. She has become an inspiration to performers throughout Asia and around the world while remaining one of musical theater’s most consistently elegant vocal interpreters. 11. Sutton Foster Sutton Foster represents the classic Broadway triple threat tradition in modern form, combining a bright and flexible voice with exceptional dance ability and an instinctive understanding of comedy. Her breakthrough arrived with Thoroughly Modern Millie, where the title role required almost relentless energy. The song Gimme Gimme became one of Foster’s signature performances, beginning with determination and growing into a full theatrical declaration of romantic longing. Her clear belt and ability to shape a long musical build made the number a favorite among musical theater singers. Foster’s success was not dependent on one particular style, however. She could move from broad comedy to emotional vulnerability while maintaining the natural stage presence that makes an audience want to follow her character. Her performance as Reno Sweeney in Anything Goes demonstrated Foster’s abilities at their most complete. The title number demands strong singing while surrounded by increasingly elaborate choreography, culminating in a thrilling dance sequence. Foster makes the entire performance appear buoyant even though the physical demands are enormous. Blow, Gabriel, Blow gives her another opportunity to combine vocal power with charismatic command of an ensemble. In Violet, Foster moved toward more introspective material, allowing songs such as On My Way to reveal a less glamorous and more emotionally searching side of her acting. The Drowsy Chaperone, Shrek the Musical, Little Women, and The Music Man further demonstrated her ability to inhabit very different theatrical worlds. Foster understands that Broadway entertainment involves more than simply producing impressive notes. Rhythm, physicality, expression, timing, and connection with the audience all matter. Her finest performances carry the exuberance associated with classic musical comedy while still feeling completely contemporary, making Sutton Foster one of the defining Broadway performers of her generation. 12. Kristin Chenoweth Kristin Chenoweth possesses one of Broadway’s most unusual combinations of vocal gifts. She can produce a remarkably high classical soprano, shift into contemporary musical theater singing, deliver a strong belt, and execute rapid comedy with extraordinary precision. Her early Broadway success in You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown revealed her gift for making small comic moments feel enormous. As Sally Brown, Chenoweth turned My New Philosophy into a display of lightning fast character changes, vocal agility, and immaculate comic timing. Yet it was her creation of Glinda in Wicked that permanently established her place in modern Broadway history. The role requires a singer who can make exaggerated comedy believable while gradually revealing genuine emotional depth beneath the character’s glittering surface. Popular became Chenoweth’s signature song because it captures nearly every element of her theatrical personality. She moves through the number with playful phrasing, sudden shifts in vocal color, carefully timed spoken moments, and a soprano that can float effortlessly above the comedy. Her duet with Idina Menzel on For Good reveals the other side of Glinda. The theatrical sparkle disappears as the characters acknowledge how profoundly their friendship has changed them. Chenoweth’s Broadway work has also included On the Twentieth Century, Promises, Promises, Steel Pier, and The Apple Tree, each drawing on different areas of her vocal and comic ability. Her concert performances frequently move between Broadway standards, country music, gospel, opera influenced material, and popular songs, demonstrating rare stylistic freedom. Chenoweth’s size has often been contrasted humorously with the scale of her voice, but the real fascination lies in her control. She can shift from delicate soprano to comic speech to full theatrical power without breaking character. That versatility makes her one of Broadway’s most distinctive and immediately recognizable singers. 13. Mandy Patinkin Mandy Patinkin approaches Broadway singing with the intensity of an actor who happens to possess a remarkable voice. His performances can be beautiful, eccentric, explosive, intimate, or emotionally raw, sometimes moving between those extremes within a single number. Patinkin first achieved major Broadway recognition as Che in Evita. The role requires the performer to function as narrator, critic, observer, and participant, and songs such as Oh What a Circus gave Patinkin the opportunity to combine powerful singing with sharp dramatic commentary. His bright upper register and unusual phrasing distinguished him immediately from more conventional leading men. Patinkin’s defining Broadway role came as Georges Seurat in Stephen Sondheim’s Sunday in the Park with George. The musical explores artistic obsession, human connection, and the cost of creating something lasting. Finishing the Hat became one of Patinkin’s greatest performances because the song requires intellectual precision and genuine vulnerability. Georges attempts to explain why making art can become more compelling than ordinary relationships, and Patinkin allows the vocal line to follow the character’s restless thoughts. Move On, sung with Bernadette Peters, provides the emotional resolution, encouraging the artist to continue despite uncertainty. Patinkin’s concert career has allowed him to explore an enormous range of theater songs, including Stephen Sondheim’s Being Alive. His approach is highly personal, often altering dynamics and phrasing to reveal unexpected emotional details. He also possesses a gift for performing in Yiddish, connecting Broadway tradition with his own cultural heritage. Patinkin may not represent the smoothest version of conventional Broadway masculinity, and that is exactly why he matters. His singing feels alive with thought. Every word appears to be happening for the first time, giving familiar songs renewed dramatic urgency. 14. Brian Stokes Mitchell Brian Stokes Mitchell possesses one of the grandest baritone voices in modern Broadway history, combining classical resonance with warmth, authority, and exceptional theatrical flexibility. His commanding sound made him an ideal leading man for large scale musicals, but his acting prevents the voice from becoming merely impressive. One of his defining roles was Coalhouse Walker Jr. in Ragtime. The character begins with confidence and optimism before being transformed by injustice and tragedy. Wheels of a Dream, sung with Audra McDonald, expresses an expansive hope for family and the future, while later passages in the score require Mitchell to channel grief and anger without sacrificing musical control. Mitchell’s portrayal of Don Quixote in Man of La Mancha gave him another signature song in The Impossible Dream. The number has been performed by countless singers, but Mitchell’s rich baritone gives the familiar melody unusual dignity and emotional weight. He builds toward the final phrases patiently, allowing the character’s impossible idealism to sound noble rather than naive. Mitchell also made a powerful impression in Kiss Me, Kate, where Were Thine That Special Face and other Cole Porter songs allowed him to display elegance, humor, and romantic warmth. His Broadway credits also include Kiss of the Spider Woman, King Hedley II, Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown, and Shuffle Along. Mitchell’s voice has the kind of natural scale that can fill a theater without sounding forced, yet he is equally effective when reducing the sound to something intimate. That control makes his singing especially satisfying. He belongs to the tradition of Broadway leading men who can command a stage through vocal authority while still treating every song as a dramatic scene. Brian Stokes Mitchell combines grandeur with humanity, a rare and enduring theatrical combination. 15. Michael Crawford Michael Crawford became one of musical theater’s most internationally recognizable voices through his creation of the Phantom in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s The Phantom of the Opera. Before that historic role, Crawford had already established a varied career in theater, film, comedy, and musical performance. His Broadway work included Black Comedy and later the spectacular musical Barnum, where the role of P. T. Barnum demanded singing, acting, physical agility, and charismatic command of the stage. Songs such as There Is a Sucker Born Ev’ry Minute revealed Crawford’s skill as an energetic theatrical storyteller. Yet the Phantom changed the trajectory of his career and gave him music ideally suited to the haunting quality of his voice. The Music of the Night became Crawford’s defining song. Rather than approaching the Phantom purely as a booming figure of menace, Crawford used a controlled and seductive vocal style that made the character mysterious and strangely vulnerable. The melody unfolds in long phrases, demanding careful breath control and a gradual increase in intensity. Crawford’s performance makes the song feel intimate even within the enormous theatrical machinery surrounding the production. The Phantom of the Opera, sung with Sarah Brightman, allows him to reveal a more commanding side, while later scenes expose desperation beneath the Phantom’s authority. Crawford’s interpretation helped establish expectations for every performer who followed in the role. His voice is lighter than some later Phantoms, but its distinctive mixture of sweetness, tension, and dramatic focus suited the character remarkably well. He later became a successful concert performer and recorded many musical theater standards, carrying his association with Broadway and the West End to audiences around the world. Michael Crawford’s greatest achievement was making a masked and mysterious character emotionally recognizable through the sound of the voice alone.
