Open the full Ask Rio Times → What was announced The Bemba Royal Establishment cancelled this year’s Ukusefya Pa Ng’wena, which had been scheduled for 17 to 19 September. News Diggers and Zambia Monitor both reported the decision. The royal council said the prevailing mood in Ulubemba, the Bemba heartland, was not conducive to holding festivities. The ceremony has been pushed to next year rather than abandoned. Sponsorships and donations already received will be transferred to and accounted for at the 2027 edition. That is an unusually specific commitment for a cancellation notice. What the Bemba ceremony commemorates The ceremony commemorates the migration of the Bemba people from the Luba-Lunda kingdoms and their settlement in what is now northern Zambia. Its name refers to the crocodile, the clan symbol of the ruling house. It is one of the largest traditional gatherings in a country that has dozens of them, drawing tens of thousands of people to Mungwi in Northern Province. Chiefs, government ministers and diaspora visitors attend. Zambia’s traditional ceremonies are also a genuine tourism product, and several are promoted internationally as cultural events. The phrase doing the work The royal council’s language was careful. It cited the prevailing mood rather than naming any cause, and gave no further explanation. That phrasing is not accidental in a country that has just held a general election. The ceremony would have fallen weeks after the vote. It is worth stating plainly that the council did not give a political reason. That inferring one would be inference rather than reporting. The royal establishment’s own position The Bemba Royal Establishment has separately said its policy is to work with whichever government is in power, without aligning itself with a particular political party. That statement was issued in the context of Zambia’s political developments. Traditional authorities in Zambia occupy a delicate constitutional space. They hold real influence over land and local legitimacy, and are formally expected to stay out of partisan politics. A cancellation that avoids explanation is one way of protecting that position. It is also a signal in itself. Who loses money when a ceremony is called off Large traditional ceremonies generate real local economic activity: transport, accommodation, catering, traders and craft sellers. For Mungwi and the surrounding district, three days of visitors matter. Corporate sponsorship is the other side of that economy. Zambian banks, brewers and telecoms companies sponsor ceremonies as a marketing channel with genuine reach. Carrying sponsorships forward protects those relationships and pushes the spending into next year. The district still loses this year’s trade. Cultural calendars as economic infrastructure Across the region, traditional ceremonies have quietly become part of the tourism offer, alongside wildlife and landscape. They are among the few products that draw visitors into rural districts rather than into parks and capitals. That gives them an economic weight their organisers rarely claim. It also makes cancellations more consequential than they look. For readers who follow Latin America, the parallel with regional festivals is close. They are cultural events that function as annual income for places with few alternatives. What it says about the moment A royal council choosing not to celebrate is making a statement about the temper of its constituency. Institutions with long time horizons tend to be cautious about appearing tone-deaf. Zambia has had a politically intense year, and the Bemba-speaking north is one of its most significant political blocs. That context is real whether or not it is cited. The honest summary is that a major cultural institution has decided this is not a year for a festival, and has declined to say more. What to watch The first marker is whether next year’s ceremony is confirmed with dates, which would settle the question of postponement versus quiet lapse. The second is whether sponsors accept the carry-over or seek refunds. That will indicate how the corporate side reads the situation. The third is whether other Zambian ceremonies scheduled for the coming months proceed as planned. If they do, this decision was specific to Ulubemba.
