BELMOPAN, Thurs. July 2, 2026 Belize welcomed 111 new citizens from 22 countries on Thursday, June 25, as the Ministry of Immigration, Governance and Labour hosted a nationality ceremony celebrating the country’s diversity and the contributions that immigrants continue to make to national development. The ceremony brought together individuals who have chosen to make Belize their permanent home after years of living, working, and raising families in the country. The new citizens hailed from countries across the Americas, Europe, Africa, and Asia, reflecting Belize’s multicultural identity and longstanding history as a nation built by people from many different backgrounds. The largest group of new citizens came from Honduras, with 32 recipients, followed by 28 from El Salvador. Others originated from the United States, India, Bangladesh, Cuba, Canada, Nigeria, Mexico, Nicaragua, and several other countries, including Belgium, Bolivia, China, France, Ghana, Haiti, Lebanon, Pakistan, Sierra Leone, Trinidad and Tobago, Turkey, and Zimbabwe. Addressing the new citizens of Belize, Minister of Immigration, Governance and Labour, Hon. Kareem Musa acknowledged the sacrifices many had made before reaching this milestone. “Many of you have resided in Belize for a considerable period. You diligently worked, some often in challenging and low-paying jobs, while simultaneously supporting your families,” Musa said. He noted that many of the recipients have children who were either born in Belize or have spent most of their lives in the country, making them an integral part of Belizean society. “Their aspirations, your children’s aspirations, dreams and patriotism are remarkably similar to ours. They are an integral part of our Belizean society,” the minister said. Musa emphasized that Belize’s strength has always been rooted in its diversity, describing immigration as a defining feature of the country’s identity. “Diversity strengthens our nation and fills our hearts with hope. As a nation of immigrants, we are perpetually replenished with aspiring individuals who wholeheartedly believe in the Belizean dream. Generations of migrants and immigrants have collectively shaped this country into what it is today. It is what sets us apart,” he reiterated. The minister also outlined a series of reforms undertaken by the Nationality and Passports Department to modernize citizenship services. These include reducing application backlogs, increasing the frequency of Scrutinizing Committee meetings, expanding senior staffing, developing a digital archive for nationality records, and preparing for the introduction of online passport application services. According to the ministry, the reforms are intended to improve the efficiency of nationality services while safeguarding the integrity of Belize’s citizenship process
