Beecher High School reopening after more than 20 years Renovated building offers new career, health and STEAM programs MOUNT MORRIS TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WNEM) — Beecher High School is reopening after sitting vacant for more than two decades. The building underwent a multi-million dollar renovation. New programs planned The district planned the new high school around career and college readiness. Plans include career and technical education, a health academy and a focus on STEAM. Jendayi “Dr. J” Gardner, superintendent of Beecher Community Schools, said the facility includes innovative programming such as a STEAM smart lab and the Health Science Academy. “Having this facility. Having the innovative programming such as STEAM smart lab, The Health Science Academy. It’s showing our students that we believe in you. We love you. We want you to have the best,” Gardner said. Renovation years in the making In February 2025, school leaders announced plans to renovate the long vacant building. Marvin Smoot, board president of Beecher Community Schools, said the district wants to expose students to new opportunities. “We’re trying to expose our students to new opportunities. So they can compete across the country and we’re true believers that you can’t teach the way you did 20 and 30 years ago. So we’re making education fun again,” Smoot said. Alumni welcomed back for a reunion Ciarra Ford, Becky Brown and Dani Dye, members of the classes of 2003, 1986 and 1981, said the new generation will get the same feeling alumni once had. “With the new generation. It’s going to give them that feeling that we used to have. With community, with teachers working with the parents,” they said. Cheryl Jiles-Venerable and Kenyetta Golson, members of the class of 1982, said the reopening will benefit the community. “It’s gonna bring back a second wind. A second breath of life for the community. Buc Town, we do matter and we are Bucs for life,” they said. Pamela Price, class of 1978, said the new school could draw more development to the area. “We got a whole new school. So, that could even bring in more businesses, more housing.
