GOLDSTEIN: It’s absurd for Jewish Canadians to treat Liberals as allies The Liberals already have made the mental calculation there are 1.78 million Muslims in Canada compared to 335,000 Jews Article content See more Toronto Sun on Google — save as a Preferred Source A measure of how seriously Prime Minister Mark Carney and the Liberals take the unprecedented explosion of Jew hatred across Canada is indicated by their leisurely response to it. Recommended Videos On Feb. 4, they announced the creation of a “Ministerial Advisory Council on Rights, Equality and Inclusion” to replace the offices of the “Special Envoy on Preserving Holocaust Remembrance and Combatting Antisemitism” and the “Special Representative on Combatting Islamophobia”, created by Justin Trudeau. I call it “operation word salad.” Why? Because the special envoy on combatting antisemitism, Deborah Lyons, had already resigned her post before her term was up, telling the Canadian Jewish News she was exhausted from nearly two years of “waking up every day to a fight,” trying to get Canadian business, religious and political leaders to speak up and stand with the Jewish community, which left her “despondent and despairing.” Governments, she said, “found it easier to hold summits to fight carjackings and tariffs – yet could not cooperate when it came to combatting hate.” That’s still the federal strategy. Four months after announcing his new advisory council, Carney re-announced it — it was nothing new — at a reform Jewish synagogue in Toronto, Holy Blossom Temple, on June 1. All he did was name its members, some of whom would have better been left unnamed if the goal was for Jews to take it seriously. As of August 12 — two months and 11 days later — the advisory council headed by Identity Minister Marc Miller has met once — more than six months after it was first announced by Carney. This amid unprecedented violence and hatred aimed at Canada’s Jewish community — the worst since the 1930s — that has been going on ever since Hamas’ terrorist attack on Israel on Oct. 7, 2023, two years, 10 months, and five days ago. It’s long past time we Jews — especially Liberal Jews who for some reason still believe Carney and Co. are our allies — need to wake up. They are not. They have already made the mental calculation there are 1.78 million Muslims in Canada compared to 335,000 Jews and as Industry Minister Melanie Joly told former NDP leader Tom Mulcair: “Thomas, have you seen the demographics in my riding?” The only political party that has consistently stood with Canada’s Jewish community is the Conservatives under Pierre Poilievre (and Stephen Harper and Brian Mulroney) no matter how many times Poilievre is attacked and disparaged in the liberal media. But you don’t have to support Poilievre or his party to know it’s embarrassing for us as a community to grovel before Liberal politicians from Carney on down. Politely asking them to please say something nice about Jews, that antisemitism is bad and that it would be nice if Jew haters stopped shooting at our places of worship and children’s day schools, setting fire to Jewish businesses and threatening Jewish students on university campuses. Being polite hasn’t gotten us anywhere with politicians at all levels of government who ignored the unprecedented rise of years of open Jew hatred exploding on our streets, because once you let that evil out of the box, however belatedly you claim to be concerned about it, in the real world it’s impossible to put back in the box. The result is that huge sections of our chattering classes — if they’re not openly cheering about it — have tacitly accepted the argument of the Jew haters that Jews living in Canada are responsible for the actions of the Netanyahu government in Gaza and Lebanon and therefore it’s only just that it’s open season on us. In the face of that it doesn’t matter how many people the police arrest for hate crimes — and, to be fair, they are taking it more seriously now, albeit too late — or how many times the courts give them a slap on the wrist. The damage is done and now we’re reaping the whirlwind. We need to figure out who are real allies are, and act accordingly.
