Бангладеш возглавил мировой рейтинг стран с наибольшим объемом просроченных кредитов

Bangladesh has emerged as the country with the highest share of non-performing loans in its banking sector, with bad loans accounting for nearly one-third of total lending, according to Prothom Alo. Data from Bangladesh Bank showed that non-performing loans stood at around ₹4.68 lakh crore at the end of June 2026, representing 32.78 per cent of total bank lending. The figure was around ₹4.54 lakh crore three months earlier, meaning bad loans rose by approximately ₹13,800 crore between March and June. The rise has been driven in part by the recognition of loans that had previously remained outside the non-performing category. Banking sector sources told the Bangladeshi newspaper that several troubled loans had been kept classified as regular for years through rescheduling, concessions and accounting practices. “During the previous Awami League government, many troubled loans had been shown as regular for years through loan rescheduling, special concessions and accounting changes," people from the Bangladeshi banking sector told the newspaper. The sources said subsequent reviews and audits brought previously concealed irregularities to light. “Following the political change, reviews of banks’ assets and audits by domestic and international institutions brought to light the actual extent of irregularities, fraud and anonymous loans. As a result, a huge volume of loans that had previously remained hidden have now been classified as non-performing." Bangladesh is followed in the global ranking by Chad, Equatorial Guinea, Algeria and Ghana. Ukraine, which previously had the highest non-performing loan ratio, has dropped out of the top five as its banking sector began seeing an improvement in its bad loan position from 2024. Ukraine's central bank reported that lending across the country's banking sector increased by 133.7 billion hryvnia, or 10.3 per cent, during the first six months of 2025. Over the same period, its non-performing loan ratio declined to 27 per cent. At the time, one US dollar was equivalent to 44.61 hryvnia. The deterioration in Bangladesh has been particularly severe among five banks that were merged, with more than 80 per cent of their loans classified as non-performing. Several other state-owned and private banks have also recorded bad loan ratios exceeding 50 per cent. Loans extended under political influence, including fake and anonymous lending, along with weak oversight, slower business activity and an energy crisis have contributed to the worsening situation. The scale of the problem has also expanded sharply in official data. In June 2024, recognised non-performing loans across Bangladesh's banking sector stood at around ₹1.63 lakh crore. Two years later, the figure had risen beyond ₹4.6 lakh crore. However, the increase does not represent only loans that became problematic during these two years. A substantial portion consists of loans that had already faced difficulties but were previously kept from being classified as non-performing through rescheduling, special concessions and accounting practices. Ukraine's experience has moved in the opposite direction. Its banks wrote off old non-performing loans that had been fully provisioned for, while recoveries and restructuring helped reduce bad loans. At the same time, increased lending of comparatively better quality contributed to a decline in both the volume and ratio of non-performing loans. Bangladesh's banking sector, meanwhile, has increasingly brought previously concealed troubled lending into the official bad loan figures, pushing the country to the top of the global ranking.
