Aviation fans call for clarity on use of famous Mound at Prestwick Airport for new development The site has become a popular attraction with visitors travelling from far and wide for a vantage point of the Prestwick runway. Worried plane spotters fear their favourite vantage point could disappear under a pile of rubble. Aviation fans who use the famous Mound overlooking Prestwick Airport say the location has been turned into a building site. Large scale work has begun to pave the way for a new aircraft maintenance facility which will span 68,000-square-feet. The ambitious plans, lodged by South Ayrshire Council, form part of the region's growing aerospace sector. Work to prepare the site and construct a new access road is now underway. Flight enthusiasts have raised concerns that the famous 'Spotters' Hill' - which draws hundreds of visitors to the site overlooking Prestwick's runway each week - could face an uncertain future. The location is expected to be packed for this weekend's Ayr Show, with fans clamouring for a close-up view of aircraft such as the Red Arrows and RAF Typhoon. Aviation fan Stu Smith is amongst those who make regular visits to The Mound, producing flight-themed content for his 55,000 followers on Facebook. A surge in activity on the tarmac has drawn enthusiasts from far and wide to watch the likes of the RAF Voyager aircraft and Prestwick's bustling cargo activity. Stu, 37, told Ayrshire Live: "It's now a really popular site and I don't think people realise just how much of a tourist attraction it's become. Just the other day I was talking to a chap who'd got up at 4am to travel from Newcastle so he could spend the whole day there. "Another guy I spoke to recently had come to Ayrshire for a week's holiday, specifically to spend time at The Mound, so it brings its own benefits to the local economy. "When I started posting videos on my social media of the planes, the response was great. I try to get down there most days now and it's almost like a wee community that exists. There's lots of familiar faces. "The stuff that's being built in the area is obviously really positive and that's great. I guess it's just a concern if we lost something so popular like The Mound in the process." We told earlier this year how expansive proposals for the aerospace cluster at Prestwick could create up to 450 highly-skilled engineer and mechanic jobs, as well as 60 apprenticeships, with money for the scheme coming from the Scottish Government, Scottish Enterprise and a contribution from the UK Government. The project forms part of the wider ongoing investment in the aerospace cluster and Ayrshire Growth Deal. A South Ayrshire Council spokesperson said: “It would not be appropriate for us to comment on live planning applications, however we appreciate the importance of this location to aviation fans. Our aim is to ensure that accessibility to Spotters Hill remains.”
