The Coimbatore district administration has begun proceedings after the Madras High Court in a recent order directed closure of eight resorts functioning in and around Anaikatti, which lacked certain requisite approvals.
District Collector Pavankumar G. Giriyappanavar told The Hindu that the process has been initiated as per the High Court order and DTPC Act (Tamil Nadu Town and Country Planning Act) and rules.
He said officials involved in the process have begun serving notices to the eight resorts as per proceedings.
A special Division Bench comprising Justices N. Sathish Kumar and K. Rajasekar in its order on August 21 directed the District Collector to close the eight resorts identified by a committee headed by the Collector. The committee, also comprising Forest Range Officer, Tahsildar, Coimbatore (North) and the Block Development Officer (Periyanaickenpalayam) as members, had inspected private resorts functioning in No.24 Veerapandi and No.22 Nanjundapuram village panchayats. The High Court order stated that only two resorts, My Village Eco and Darza Resorts, had proper planning permission.
The court ordered to close eight others, SR Jungle Resort, Corniche Inn, Dolphins Resort and Restaurant, K.K.Selfie Point, Farm Retreat, Fire Fly Resort, Bharath Holidays Resort and Gmax Resort and Restaurant, stating that they do not have any proper planning permission or other requisite licences or permissions. As per the order, even the My Village Eco and Darza Resorts obtained such permission only on July 1, 2026.
Besides closing the eight resorts, the order further directed the Collector to file a report before the Court on the next date of hearing. It directed the committee to conduct a further field inspection and ascertain whether any other resorts are functioning in the said area. As per the order, appropriate action should be taken if any other resorts are found to be functioning without the requisite permissions or approvals.
According to a list prepared by local activists, there are 25 more resorts operating in the region other than the 10 listed before the court. Activists, who alleged that many resorts operate without submitting any application, wanted the committee to conduct a thorough inspection and find out all the resorts and verify their approvals.
Mr. Giriyappanavar said that the committee already conducted field inspections and are in the process of serving notices to several other resorts as part of verifying their approvals.
