Thoothukudi Corporation has organised a stakeholder engagement and awareness activity on climate resilience, accessibility and urban mobility, here on Wednesday, with the support of the The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI), under the UK-PACT, funded project. The event, which was conducted as part of the PACT-Digi-PULSE initiative, “Advancing carbon neutral transitions using digital twin-based planning for urban living and sustainable environment,” led by IIT-Madras in partnership with The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI), Institute for Transportation and Development Policy (ITDP) India and Centre of Excellence for Low Carbon and Fuel Cell Technologies (Cenex). Addressing the event, Thoothukudi Corporation Mayor Jegan Periyasamy emphasised the shared responsibilities of citizens in maintaining the cleanliness and effective waste management, with a vision of making Thoothukudi a model clean city. Meanwhile, Thoothukudi Corporation Commissioner S. Priyanka highlighted the importance of promoting footpath use and strengthening solid waste management to improve the quality of life and sustainable development of the city. As part of the programme, Puckle Canal Road stretch study was included, which provided an opportunity to participants to understand the local climate vulnerabilities and mobility challenges. The programme included the unveiling of an infographic wall painting and children’s awareness drawing activity. The wall painting emphasised the importance of public transport, non-motorised transport, safe road crossing practices and source segregation of waste. Through a participatory mapping exercise, residents mapped their experience of flooding, changes in travel routes, mobility barriers, public transport disruptions and access to essential services. Representatives from Thoothukudi Corporation, TERI, resident welfare associations and Corporation school students were present at the event. Published - September 03, 2026 08:18 pm IST
