Virudhunagar Collector N.O. Sukhaputra on Thursday inaugurated a vendor development programme-cum-industrial exhibition for Central public sector units and government departments in Virudhunagar. Senior Scientist of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) centre at Mahendragiri, Narayanan Appu, was present at the inauguration of the exhibition organised by the Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME). Speaking on the occasion, the Collector said that despite having a fireworks industry, garment industry and a good agricultural sector, Virudhunagar district continued to be economically backward due to its geographical location. The district was rich in human resources, thanks to the number of educational institutions such as engineering colleges, arts and science colleges and ITIs. The district administration had been taking various steps, including conducting job fairs, to find the right jobs for youths in industrial houses. “We keep listening to complaints about the lack of a proper market for products produced in the district. Various industries are also facing difficulties in procuring spare parts for their machinery. In this backdrop, there is a communication gap between Central PSUs procuring spare parts and entrepreneurs, especially MSME units,” the Collector said. The two-day exhibition would help MSME units bridge the gap, he added. Entrepreneurs could learn about the requirements and rules of Central PSUs and make use of their production capacity by signing memoranda of understanding with them. This would create new job opportunities and give impetus to economic development, he added. Forty PSUs, including Khadi and Village Industries Commission, Integrated Textile and Apparel Development Centre, Neyveli Lignite Corporation, Ministry of Railways, India Post, Kalpakkam Atomic Power Station and Indian Oil Corporation, participated in the exhibition. NLC Chief Executive Officer T.A. Aravind Raja, NCPL Director Ashok Bhatia and Joint Director of MSME Dhayalan were present. Published - August 27, 2026 07:07 pm IST
