My nine-year-old grandson startled me a few days ago when he simply asked, “Poppo, who are you going to vote for and why?” He’d obviously taken notice of all the lawn signs around our neighborhood and had been told there would soon be an election.
What a straightforward question, but what a complex answer, especially one to give a bright young mind. So, I replied, “I’ll vote for the person who can work best with others to make life better for us all now and for you when you grow up.” He was satisfied, at least for the moment, but his question lingered long with me.
After careful consideration, Carleigh Beriont is the candidate for Congressional District 1 who best meets those two criteria. Over the years, I have observed her as a member, then chair of our Select Board. And more recently, I have followed her campaign tour around our district. Wherever she goes, Carleigh is there not with slogans or vague assurances but first just to listen to what is of greatest concern to people as they live their daily lives: the cost of living, access to affordable housing, health care, child care, the future of Social Security, adequate school funding, school lunch programs, taxes, the ability to continue to live in the communities in which they have grown up, the quality of the water we drink and the air we breathe, and more recently the benefits and challenges of technology, especially its effect on young people. Her grasp of these issues, down to details, is extremely impressive.
These are local versions of national concerns: issues that have both immediate and long-term impacts. And who better to work to address them in Congress than someone who has worked to deal with them locally, especially doing so in a bipartisan, collaborative manner?
Carleigh knows, and she says so, that no one in Congress works alone but instead works with others — as she’s done in Hampton — to build coalitions. And her energy to do so comes directly from the people she meets. That is where her intelligence, empathy and determination come together to work on behalf of her constituents.
That would be a lot for me to explain to my grandson, but it’s what prompts me to endorse Carleigh Beriont — for us all for now, and for our children and grandchildren.
This week, I had the opportunity to visit the Canadian Embassy and meet with Deputy Ambassador Nadia Theodore as part of my work as a member of the New Hampshire Canadian Trade Council. The visit came at a difficult moment: Canada has suspended trade negotiations with the United States, and …
You may have a friend or a loved one who is appearing in Family Court, or you may soon appear yourself. You wonder what it’s about and how it differs from “regular” court.
One of the many actions of this administration that saddened me was the demolition of the East Wing of the White House — a piece of our nation’s history that can never be replaced. Now the Trump administration is moving ahead with another destructive act: rescinding the Roadless Rule, which …

One of the greatest honors for me as Executive Councilor for District 1 is representing the towns around Lake Winnipesaukee, one of New Hampshire’s most stellar natural resources. My district also covers many other beautiful lakes and ponds in the Lakes Region and the North Country. Those wa…
I first met Maura Sullivan while volunteering on Pete Buttigieg’s campaign for the 2020 Democratic presidential nomination. We were both drawn to a candidate whose words seemed to mend the terrible ruptures in our society.
I served alongside Stefany Shaheen on the task force that then-Governor Maggie Hassan created to investigate the pediatric cancer cluster I had identified on New Hampshire’s Seacoast in 2014. I later spent years on the Pease Restoration Advisory Board, working to address PFAS pollution at th…
The 2026 New Hampshire House session ended with a bit of political theater: a debate about censuring Rep. James Spillane, R-Deerfield. I am an old theater kid, so normally I enjoy political theater, but this piece of theater featured a boring and utterly unsympathetic protagonist. I am talki…
My approach to governing has always been straightforward: government should work effectively, operate efficiently, and remain accountable to the taxpayers who fund it. That means constantly looking for ways to improve how we deliver services, eliminate unnecessary waste and bureaucracy, and …
