Профсоюз стальных рабочих Рипона отмечает 85-летие: от исторических забастовок до избрания первой чернокожей женщины на пост президента

As Ripon’s United Steelworkers Local 1327 celebrates its 85th year, members are reflecting on the generations of workers who have shaped the union’s history and growth. Local 1327 President James Reinsbach said some of the most significant changes in the union’s history came during the late 1990s, when Alliance Laundry experienced a major layoff. Alliance was able to overcome the rough stretch and became stronger and bigger today. “Expansions allowed the company to add hundreds of jobs in the community, growing from around 500 in the early 2000s to around 1,600 currently in Ripon,” Reinsbach said, noting that the growth has occurred alongside a union that has remained an important part of the workplace and community. Local 1327 was formally established and chartered in May 1942 with a mission of securing collective bargaining rights, establishing standard grievance and arbitration procedures, and improving dangerous working conditions. A significant event in union’s history was the four-month strike at the end of its contract in November 1965. The strike lasted until March 1966, when an agreement was made for a new contract. The union negotiated a new five-year contract in 2021 that guaranteed an annual raise and cost-of-living increases each year for members. That contract will soon come up for renegotiation. The Union Hall on Scott Street has served as a focal point for members, providing a place for meetings and other activities, Reinsbach noted. The hall also serves as a reminder of the contributions made by previous generations of members. “It helps current members remember what past members have played a part in building and reflect on the history the Union Hall has been for the community and its members over the years,” he said. That history continues to be carried forward by longtime employees. Reinsbach stated that many members with more than 35 years at Alliance Laundry are now retiring, leaving behind a legacy that will be felt by current and future workers. “We have a lot of members with over 35 years at Alliance that are currently retiring and the impact they have had on current team members will be greatly missed,” he said. “Their dedication helps to show future team members what commitment to a company and union can and should be.” Leadership also has played an important role in maintaining the union and representing its members. Reinsbach pointed to the recent death of union President Dave Page as an example of the responsibility carried by union leaders. “With the passing of past president Dave Page, I hope people understand the commitment and responsibility that was placed on him to not only do what was needed for its current members, but for future members and their families for future generations to come,” Reinsbach said. Reinsbach noted that involvement in the union extends beyond contract negotiations and workplace issues. Various union groups and activities help keep members involved in union activism, while giving them opportunities to develop leadership skills. “The unions, many groups, help keep members active in doing union activism and hopefully gives them the opportunity to grow in the union itself and better leadership skills overall,” he said. The United Steelworkers also recently made history with the election of Roxanne Brown as its international president. She is the first Black woman elected to the position. “I think her election means a lot to its members,” Reinsbach said. “It shows the diversity of the union and brings excitement to its members that the union is in good hands.” Local member Julie Carr added that it was time for a female president. “As a woman I feel extra proud of having elected a Black woman to the office of union president,” she said. While Alliance’s workforce and operations have grown over the years, Reinsbach noted the relationship between the company and union has remained strong. “Alliance’s growth over the years has not changed their relationship with the union,” he said. “We have always had a good working relationship knowing we both have a lot of responsibility to our members and community to have good paying jobs now and for future generations.” Reinsbach declined to discuss specifics of future contract negotiations with Alliance Laundry, which will begin in the fall, but noted several issues remain at the forefront of discussions. “I do not want to comment on future negotiations but as always pay, health insurance and keeping jobs here in Ripon are always at the forefront of talks,” he said. Today’s workers also face challenges that differ from those encountered by previous generations, Reinsbach said, identifying local housing, foreign companies and the rising cost of living among the biggest challenges facing union members. Looking ahead, Reinsbach said maintaining a strong and relevant union will depend on listening to workers and addressing the needs of their families. “For the union to remain strong and relevant to the workers I believe we need to listen to the workers needs and provide good paying jobs and have a good work life balance, along with good benefits to help support families,” he said. After 85 years, Reinsbach said the union’s history provides a foundation for the future, with longtime members passing their experience on to a new generation of workers.
