В Онтарио закрывается крупнейший в Канаде открытый бассейн-карьер до 7 сентября

Located at the junction of the Thames River and Trout Creek, St. Marys, Ontario, is full of historic charm. But beyond its 19th-century architecture, the town boasts Canada’s largest outdoor freshwater swimming pool, and visitors only have a few days left to take a dip before it closes for the season on Sept. 7. Originally a limestone quarry that ceased operations in 1920, the St. Marys Quarry was converted into a public swimming hole in the mid-1940s and has since become one of the town’s top attractions. A refreshing late-summer Ontario escape ARTICLE CONTINUES BELOW Open daily from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. through the end of the season, the quarry features cliff jumping, a 25-foot water trampoline, picnic areas, swimming rafts and a waterslide. Visitors can also check out the Super Splash Waterpark, an inflatable obstacle course anchored by a 14-foot-tall “Ice Tower.” General admission is $5 for youth (ages 3-18) and $7.50 for adults, available online or on-site. Access to the Super Splash Waterpark (which also closes on Sept. 7) requires a separate pass. Nicknamed “Stonetown,” St. Marys was built around limestone ledges along the riverbanks that once powered the town’s first mills and provided materials for many of its original buildings. ARTICLE CONTINUES BELOW The town experienced a major boom when the Grand Trunk Railway arrived in the late 1850s. Today, history buffs can visit Junction Station (480 Glass St.), an 1858 landmark recognized as the only remaining station in Canada where inventor Thomas Edison worked during his time with the railroad. Other notable cultural landmarks include the 1891 Town Hall and the 1904 Carnegie Library, both central to the town’s heritage. Today's Headlines Newsletter Get our free morning newsletter.
