Although the Canada warbler does not spend the winter in Florida, it sometimes passes through on its way south. Citrus County Libraries is presenting a monthly four-part series beginning Sept. 3, "Birds of A Feather," all about birds — including warblers and their sweet, trills and melodies.
From the tiny Chipping Sparrow with its rust-red cap to the loud but beautiful Blue Jay foraging for a snack of unshelled peanuts — and many other feathered species — nature provides Florida residents with free entertainment daily.
This fall, Citrus County Libraries invites the community to a “Birds of A Feather” monthly series from September to December highlighting the various birds of the area.
All four programs will be from 10 to 11 a.m. at the Homosassa Public Library, 4100 S. Grandmarch Ave., Homosassa.
Also, seating is limited and registration is required. Please register with the online calendar, in person, or by calling the library 352-628-5626.
• Kicking off the series: “Bird-Friendly Yards” on Thursday, Sept. 3.
Want to know ways to attract birds? In this session, attendees will learn how to make your yard a bird haven.
Birders of all levels of experience are welcome to come and connect with fellow enthusiasts.
• October is dedicated to the Florida owls with “Owl Be There For You” on Thursday, Oct. 1.
Did you know that Florida is home to a pint-sized bird that lives underground rather than in trees? Named the Burrowing Owl, it has extra-long legs that help them run across open cattle pastures, or even golf courses. Also, they’re active during the day so you don’t need to be a night owl to see them.
• What's that tune? On Thursday, Nov. 5, “So Many Warblers!” is about learning to identify Florida's migratory warblers — nature’s original snowbirds. Come and learn about these lyrical birds that sing with trills, turns and changing notes.
• The final program is a fun test of your knowledge. “Bird ID Race” on Thursday, Dec. 3 includes a good-natured competition to identify the most Florida birds by call and plumage.
Look, it’s a bird!
Thanks to the Citrus County Audubon Society and local generous nature lovers, the Citrus County Library System has Birding Backpacks available for library card holders to check out and use.
Each contains everything you need to identify birds native to Florida and North America: one pair of binoculars, one “Birds of Florida” field guide book, one “Birds of Central Florida: A Guide to Common and Notable Species: pamphlet and one “Florida Birds: A Folding Pocket Guide to Familiar Species” pamphlet.
These Birding Backpacks, assembled by the Citrus County Library System, include materials provided by the Citrus County Audubon Society, Max Schulman, Tom Craig, and the Citrus County Library system.
