Вспомнили: от травмы вихря 1926 года до ограбления банка в 2011 году

Today is Wednesday, Sept. 2, 2026. Here are local news reports from 100, 50 and 15 years ago: In 1926, Charles E. Pyles of Pesotum was committed to the state hospital in Kankakee after a hearing at the Champaign County Court found him to be suffering from senile dementia. Pyles, 76, had received head injuries in May of 1917, when he was one of the victims of the great tornado that destroyed half of Mattoon. In 1976, university athletic officials are considering stricter enforcement of the ban on alcoholic beverages in Memorial Stadium during Illini football games following a request by a Champaign County sheriff’s deputy. Chief Deputy John Clark said Wednesday that he asked Richard Tamburo, associate athletic director, if the Athletic Association (AA) would enforce more strictly the ban, which prohibits possession and use of alcoholic beverages at AA events. “I know that you cannot stop it all,” Clark said, “but the university can tell the ushers to keep people from bringing in coolers.” In 2011, Champaign police are looking for a man who robbed the Central Illinois Bank, 2913 W. Kirby Ave., about 3 p.m. Friday. Champaign police Chief R.T. Finney said the robber was last seen walking away south on Duncan Road from the bank, which is just north of the County Market grocery store at Kirby and Duncan. The bank robbery is the fourth since early July in the area and the third to happen on a Friday.
