CALLOWAY COUNTY — After a boat struck a barge and injured two people, impairing one’s vision, E-911 telecommunicators successfully guided the vessel to emergency responders on Sunday. According to the Calloway County E-911 Communications Center, an individual called the agency at around 8:40 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 30, reporting that their boat had struck a barge on Kentucky Lake. Telecommunicators determined that both the caller and a passenger had sustained injuries and immediately dispatched emergency services, the center stated. The caller’s injuries significantly impaired his vision and prevented him from determining which direction to steer the boat toward rescuers — given the nature and severity of his injuries, the center stated that waiting for first responders to locate the vessel was not a viable option. Telecommunicators used RapidSOS location technology and Axon body worn camera to determine the caller’s and the responding deputies’ locations. While the caller was unable to see, he could still drive the boat and telecommunicators guided him toward responders who were positioned at a nearby dock, the center stated. According to the center, the responders advised telecommunicators that the pair’s injuries required air medical transportation. The center notified Air Evac and two helicopters responded to a landing zone Calloway County Fire-Rescue and Calloway County Sheriff’s deputies established. The center also notified the U.S. Coast Guard and requested assistance to temporarily stop commercial marine traffic on Kentucky Lake between Paris Landing and the Eggner’s Ferry bridge. At the center’s request, the Coast Guard also assisted in notifying the tow/barge that had been struck by the recreational vessel and instructed its crew to stop and coordinate with the Calloway County Fire-Rescue boat operating alongside it, the center stated. The Calloway County E-911 Communications Center commended the telecommunicators, Calloway County Sheriff’s Office, Calloway County Fire-Rescue personnel, Murray Calloway County Emergency Medical Services, Calloway County Emergency Management, Air Evac crews, United States Coast Guard and all other responders involved for their coordinated efforts during the incident.
