CHIPPEWA FALLS — Chippewa County spent about $10,000 in additional security costs for the visits from President Donald Trump and DHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy last month, according to County Administrator Andy Albarado.
The Leader-Telegram filed an open records request days after Trump’s June 5 visit to the town of Wheaton to request financial disclosures of the county’s costs for the presidential visit. A follow-up request was made last week. Albarado responded to those requests Monday.
“The costs below represent total expense outside of normal operational costs including additional staff, equipment, and support from other agencies,” Albarado wrote in a response to the Leader-Telegram on Monday. “This information has been provided by the Chippewa County Sheriff’s office, who will be submitting these expenses for reimbursement.”
Albarado wrote that the June 1 visit for Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. cost $3,041.19. The June 5 Trump visit was another $7,180.94.
Sheriff Travis Hakes was pleased with how the event came together.
“That’s just our costs, that we know of,” Hakes said Monday. “That doesn’t include the costs of the Wisconsin State Patrol, Eau Claire City (Police Department) and the Eau Claire Sheriff’s Department.”
Hakes said he’s now working on seeing if the county can get reimbursed. His department was strained because the large Force Fields electronic dance music festival was starting at the Chippewa Valley Music Festival grounds in rural Cadott that day as well.
“I have the process for how I am supposed to submit the reimbursement,” Hakes said. “I will be working at getting that done this week. I’ll do everything I can to get us reimbursed.”
Hakes stressed that “public safety doesn’t worry about partisan politics,” and his goal was to make sure the event went smoothly with no issues, and that was accomplished. He praised all the law enforcement partners.
“We came together and it worked well,” Hakes said. “I’m always impressed with how selfless everyone is. Everyone came together for the good of the mission.”
The Leader-Telegram estimated about 700 people were inside a barn building at the Custer Farms on June 5, with hundreds more outside, for Trump’s visit. Trump was the first sitting president to hold a public event in Chippewa County since President George W. Bush visited Chippewa Falls in September 2004.
