Ученики двух школ Гуама перейдут на двухсменное расписание из-за незавершенных ремонтных работ в Тьяне

Major repairs at Tiyan High School have been completed, but roof work and other remaining projects could keep Tiyan and Simon A. Sanchez High School students on a proposed double session schedule through the end of the semester if the campus passes a Sept. 11 inspection and students return to in person classes. The Guam Department of Education and Core Tech International have completed repairs involving bathrooms, sewage odor, exit doors, ceiling tiles and gaps between doors and walls. Remaining work includes the installation of panic bars, remaining painting, 17 A/C units and roof repairs, according to GDOE. The Department of Public Health and Social Services is scheduled to reinspect the Tiyan campus on Sept. 11. If the campus passes, GDOE hopes to resume in person instruction the following week. The proposed reopening would not immediately return Sanchez and Tiyan students to a regular school day. Tiyan students would attend classes in the morning until about noon, followed by Sanchez students from about noon to 5:30 p.m. while repair crews continue work on the campus. The double session arrangement could remain in place through the end of the semester. However, the schedule could return to normal sooner if Core Tech International completes the necessary roof repairs and the second-floor classrooms pass reinspection. The Tiyan campus closed after an Aug. 13 inspection resulted in 50 demerits and a “D” grade. The closure came three days after the school year began and shifted about 2,300 Sanchez and Tiyan students to hard copy packets and online assignments. The proposed reopening plan was discussed Tuesday evening during a Simon Sanchez Parent Teacher Organization meeting, where parents questioned GDOE officials about the closure, construction, transportation, student safety, online learning and communication. Sanchez is preparing for an afternoon schedule ending at about 5:30 p.m., although the final bell schedule has not yet been released. The afternoon arrangement would remain necessary until enough additional classrooms become available through completed repairs and successful reinspections. GDOE announced Friday several major facility problems have been addressed. All toilets and urinals are now fully operational, and all bathrooms are complete. The previously reported sewage odor has been eliminated, while all exit doors are closing properly. Ceiling tile replacement and painting are complete in the JKL building. Ground floor ceiling tile work in the ABCDE building is nearly complete, and workers have repaired gaps between doors and walls. Remaining work includes: • Installation of panic bars on doors • Completion of remaining painting • Installation of 17 A/C units • Roof repairs Roof cracks discovered during recent cleanup remain among the unfinished work that must be addressed. Ahead of the Sept. 11 inspection, Core Tech and GDOE will focus on designated buildings and common areas that could be used when students return. The available space would include first floor classrooms in buildings A, B, C, D and E, both floors of buildings J, K and L, the cafeteria, the throne and the library. Those areas would provide about 55 to 56 classrooms for the two schools. Transportation remains a key concern as GDOE prepares for the proposed afternoon schedule for Simon A. Sanchez High School students. At Tuesday’s meeting, when asked if Sanchez could instead share a double session with Okkodo High School in Dededo if transportation from Tiyan results in students arriving home as late as 6:30 p.m. Sanchez Principal Carla D. Masnayon said the school wants to avoid disrupting another campus and is working with the Department of Public Works to ensure transportation can meet the proposed schedule. She said the school experienced difficulties getting students home during the first three days of the school year. Sanchez previously operated an afternoon schedule at JFK, with students getting home after a 5:50 p.m. release. The proposed Sanchez schedule at Tiyan would end at about 5:30 p.m. Staff from both schools would share supervision during periods when their schedules overlap, including breaks and lunch.
