Эксперт по образованию Террелл Скрибер объяснил, что отличает ученого от отличника в современной школе

In the latest episode of the Inside Killeen podcast, host Daelan Cheh and fellow KDH News journalists Hamida Botchway and Ethan Housewright sat down with local educator, Marine Corps veteran, and podcast host Terrell Scriber for a wide-ranging conversation on what it truly takes to raise a scholar in today’s education system. Scriber teaches entrepreneurship, economics, and African American Studies at Early College High School while hosting his own show, the Raising Scholars podcast. Drawing from his military background, community leadership, and nearly a decade in the classroom, Scriber offered a grounded perspective on whole-person growth, stressing that academic success requires far more than good test scores. A central point of discussion was distinguishing a high-achieving student from a lifelong learner. Scriber explained that while straight-A students may rely on natural talent, a scholar actively seeks growth across all areas of life. “A scholar is a lifelong learner,” Scriber noted during the interview. “They’re always trying to improve, develop, do research, and try to advance in some type of form or fashion.” To cultivate that mindset at home, Scriber urged parents to take an active role in modeling those values. “In order to teach, you have to know,” said Scriber, a Shoemaker High graduate who grew up in Killeen. “You really have to break it down for them. We have to take initiative as parents and learn ourselves first, and then we can teach our kids the things that they need to learn in order to be successful in life.” That holistic preparation extends to personal discipline, financial literacy, and overcoming daily distractions — challenges Scriber regularly addresses with his students. Addressing the habits that hold young people back, Scriber joked about a common habit he calls “death scrolling,” adding, “My students just the other day corrected me, like, ‘No, Coach Scriber, it’s called doom scrolling.’ I look at it as death because it’s the death of growth and education.” The conversation also tackled broader Texas education policies, examining how state standards, the Texas Education Agency (TEA), and standardized tests like STAAR shape classroom instruction. Scriber advocated for shifting focus toward practical readiness tools like the SAT, ACT, ASVAB (a test the military uses for recruits), and financial management skills, while giving educators room to foster critical thinking through discussions and Socratic seminars. Teaching within the Killeen Independent School District brings a distinct dynamic due to its military-connected community near Fort Hood. Scriber highlighted how the area’s rich cultural diversity prepares students to navigate the world with empathy and confidence. “When you come from Killeen, since you’ve been around everybody, every nationality, and every ethnicity, you know how to talk to different people,” Scriber reflected. “You know how to be sensitive about certain subjects, you know how to respect people, but you know how to hold your own, too.” How to Listen The full episode of Inside Killeen is available now for streaming.
