Division of Historical Resources has announced that the State Historical Resources Council has added five properties, ranging from a town beach to a home in one of the Upper Valley’s first suburban developments, to the N.H. State Register of Historic Places. Believed to be the oldest building in Raymond, the Georgian-style Bean Tavern was built circa 1752 and was the site of the first election of officers to initiate local government in what was then the parish “Freetown.” The tavern continued to serve as the town meetinghouse even after a new building was constructed for that purpose. Today, it is depicted on the official town seal and the patch on Raymond police officer uniforms. The N.H. Preservation Alliance named Bean Tavern to its annual “Seven to Save” list in 2022. Built by Revolutionary War veteran Joshua Burnham circa 1777 and the home of the Hutchinson family from 1824 to 1949, the Hutchinson Homestead is historically significant not only for its Federal-style architecture and its association with the early settlement of Milford but also as the home of the Hutchinson Family Singers, one of the foremost voices for the abolition of slavery across the nation; they performed as far away as the Royal Court in England, writing and singing songs that, in addition to promoting abolitionism, supported workers’ rights, women’s rights and temperance. Woodbury Memorial Methodist Episcopal Church in Antrim exhibits the Shingle Style architecture that was common in New England at the turn of the 20th century. Built for $9,500 and dedicated on Feb. 9, 1904, it was designed by architect Archibald I. Lawrence of Berlin, N.H. Notable external features include cedar shingle exterior cladding using geometric shapes and a slightly off-center bell tower. Inside, the sanctuary features a plaster cathedral ceiling, plaster walls above beadboard wainscoting and semi-circular pew arrangements. Two large wooden roll-up doors open the space toward the vestry. Center Harbor Town Beach, Park and Canoe House’s association with the recreational history of the town dates to the mid-1800s. Originally part of the landscaped grounds of the Senter House Hotel and later the Colonial Hotel — each was destroyed by fire — it was used for farming in the years after World War I. The town acquired the site in 1964 and redeveloped it for public use. Historical features include a circa 1921 canoe house that is the architectural focus of the park, a circa 1970 boat house and a pavilion built in 1971. Located in the first intentional suburban development in West Lebanon, the Charles and Mary Chapalis House is a one-and-a-half story circa 1928 Colonial Revival-style cape with end wall chimneys, a wide shed dormer on both the front and rear roof slopes and a flat roofed sun porch on the north gable end. The house contributes to the National Register of Historic Places-eligible Crafts Avenue Neighborhood Historic District, which was started in 1892 and includes homes built in Queen Anne, Shingle and Dutch Colonial styles, as bungalows, mid-century cottages and ranch homes. Anyone wishing to nominate a property to the N.H. State Register of Historic Places must research the history of the nominated property and document it on an individual inventory form from the N.H. Division of Historical Resources. Having a property listed in the Register does not impose restrictions on property owners.
