Мужчина, планировавший самоубийство из-за долгов, спасен после ночного странствия по шоссе

George was driving as fast as possible away from his home in Florida. The failure of his business, piles of debt, and no foreseeable hope of recovery had led to a heated confrontation with his wife. The shouting and mutual accusations left him so frustrated and hopeless that he no longer had any desire to live. Intending to end his life that night, he sped recklessly down the highway, hoping to crash into something. Other drivers were terrified and scrambled to get out of his way. Amazingly, no police pulled him over. In his deep distress, he didn't even notice how far he had driven until he reached Atlanta, Georgia, and his car ran out of gas. Furious, he pulled over and wrote a suicide note to his children, assuming the police would eventually find it. By 3:00 AM, he was walking down the middle of the highway, stepping directly in front of oncoming traffic to goad drivers into hitting him. Every car swerved to avoid him. Exhausted, he finally gave up around 5:00 AM, sat down under a tree, and fell asleep. When the morning sun woke him, he realized the tree sat right next to The Salvation Army center where I was stationed at the time. His anger having cooled, he walked inside to ask for a glass of water. I happened to be the one who met him. After handing him water, I asked about his day. His expression remained blank as he deliberated whether to trust me. Seeing his exhaustion, I said, “You look so tired. Why don’t you sit down and talk with me for a while?” At those words, he broke down and poured out his heart. I gently asked, “Do you mind if we walk into the chapel and pray?” We knelt at the altar. Before praying, I handed him my Bible and asked him to open it and read whichever verse caught his eye first. He opened to 1 Peter 5:6–9 and read aloud: “Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time. Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you. Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that the family of believers throughout the world is undergoing the same kind of sufferings.” I looked at him and said, “It seems God is speaking directly to you today. Take courage—God will help you navigate these trials. Go back home to your children and fight to resolve your debts.” On that day he accepted Lord Jesus as his personal savior. I drove him back to his car. On the seat, I saw the suicide note alongside photos of his three children, all under eight years old. I asked if I could keep the note, and he agreed. After filling his gas tank and giving him enough cash to reach Florida, I sent him on his way with a prayer. Two months later, I received a letter from George. He shared that he was doing well; though his problems had not vanished overnight, he now had hope and a renewed desire to press forward. Over the years, I have taken that suicide note to the chapel altar countless times, thanking God for saving George’s life. God cared for George in his darkest hour—and God cares for you, too. No one should have to carry such heavy burdens alone. Trust that God can make a way toward healing, peace, and hope.
