FORT LEONARD WOOD — Seven drill sergeants, five days of competition and one winner of the Drill Sergeant of the Year award. After the five days of competition, Sergeant First Class Terrence Johnson was named the winner at Fort Leonard Wood. The five days at the Army base were filled with mental and physical events, including a 12-mile march with a 35-pound rucksack and reciting battle drills. Johnson will now compete in an Army-wide competition in September. The competition at Fort Leonard Wood is put together by the previous year's winner. Sergeant First Class Gil Rodriguez, Fort Leonard Wood's 2025 Drill Sergeant of the Year, said he added more mental tasks this year than have been in the competition previously. "This year is more mentally demanding, primarily due to we added a decision brief to this year's competition where competitors are going to recommend any changes to any regulation, any a program of instructions or the best course map outline for the trainees," Rodriguez said. "It was pretty overwhelming at the time, but pretty rewarding." Seven drill sergeants across the base competed in the competition — Staff Sergeant Harold Garcia, Staff Sergeant Caleb Gray, Staff Sergeant Todd Holm, Sergeant First Class Terrence Johnson, Staff Sergeant Mariah Pereida, Staff Sergeant Rhoderick Perez and Staff Sergeant Margarita Rodriguez. Perez said he originally joined the Army to fulfill his father's dream of serving America. "It has to do with my dad since he came here as an immigrant," Perez said. "He always wanted to join the United States Army, but didn't want to leave my mom alone with my brothers because she had no job during that time. So his wish was to have one of his sons join in in his place. And here I am, still serving." Johnson is the first member of the engineering battalion to win the competition at Fort Leonard Wood in over a decade. Johnson said that was the best part of the win. "That was very rewarding and fulfilling," Johnson said. "That was the best part of the competition." Johnson will be competing at Fort Jackson in South Carolina Sept. 14 through Sept. 16 for the Army-wide competition. Johnson said that's where he attended drill sergeant school, but didn't achieve all he wanted to do. He's viewing this return as a do-over. "I didn't get what I wanted when I went there," Johnson said. "I wanted to get honor grad, so I feel like this is a good place to go and get it back and win Drill Sergeant of the Year there." Contestants from Fort Leonard Wood have won the active duty competition 19 times since 1969.
