Delta Dental of New Mexico has awarded a $10,000 grant to Touro College of Dental Medicine to help dental students provide care in rural and underserved New Mexico communities.
The grant will help cover lodging expenses for third- and fourth-year students participating in Touro’s required extension rotation program. Students spend one week providing free dental care through community partners in El Rito, Santa Fe and Albuquerque while gaining clinical experience.
Delta Dental and Touro will mark the partnership with a check presentation at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Touro’s Albuquerque clinical training facility.
“This partnership helps prepare the next generation of dentists while expanding access to care for New Mexicans by giving students meaningful opportunities to learn and serve in the communities that need them most," Dr. Joseph Parkinson, executive assistant dean of Touro College of Dental Medicine, said in a statement.
State rises in higher education ranking
New Mexico has climbed to No. 18 nationally for higher education in U.S. News & World Report’s 2026 Best States rankings, two spots higher than last year and 22 spots higher than its No. 40 ranking in 2019.
The state ranked No. 2 nationally for low debt at graduation and No. 8 for low tuition and fees. The rankings consider factors including affordability, access, enrollment and educational attainment.
More than 118,000 New Mexicans have benefited from tuition-free college through the Opportunity Scholarship since its launch, according to the state Higher Education Department.
Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham approved $1.5 billion for higher education for fiscal year 2027, which the department described as the largest investment in state history.
