AROUND VT Shelburne Museum SHELBURNE — Shelburne Museum has announced the acquisition of a Revolutionary War-era portrait of William Seton by American artist Gilbert Stuart (1755-1828). Painted between 1793 and 1798, this portrait was gifted to Shelburne Museum this year from the estate of Mary Seton Abele (1938-2025), great-great-great-granddaughter of William Seton. Seton (1746-1798) was a Scottish-born merchant and financier who emigrated to New York in 1763. A Loyalist during the American Revolution, he served as the last Royal Public Notary for the City and Province of New York. After the war, he played a key role in strengthening political and financial ties between North America and France. Gilbert Stuart, who shared Seton’s Scottish heritage, likely became acquainted with him shortly after returning to the United States in 1793. VTF&W Bear Hound Association Vermont’s scientific bear management program recently received a funding contribution from the Vermont Bear Hound Association to support continuing research on bear reproduction and population dynamics, according to the Vermont Fish & Wildlife Department. Department staff are collaring female bears in the Green Mountains and Connecticut River Valley to learn about reproduction and survival as well as how different types of major food sources may influence reproduction. Initial results of the new bear reproduction study are not anticipated until 2031, but once available, the results will complement the department’s approach to estimating Vermont’s bear population trends.
