Политическая карьера Пьера Поилиевра оказалась «невыносимо легкой» после провала на выборах

Milan Kundera’s most famous novel, “The Unbearable Lightness of Being,” is built around one cruelty: the least burdensome fate is also the most unbearable. Weightlessness is worse than a crushing burden. The sense that all you were carrying, with such faith and effort, amounted to precisely nothing. I find myself continually returning to “The Unbearable Lightness of Being” in thinking about the current state of the Leader of the Opposition, Pierre Poilievre, who is in fact, not, whatever you may have heard, finished. And that is the point. In defence of Poilievre Let me make the case for Poilievre’s defence. He received 41 per cent of the votes. He was within two and a half points of being able to form government. His caucus, mostly, still supports him, if not particularly enthusiastically. After more than a year of trade turmoil, Conservatives are now insisting that Mark Carney owes Canadians an explanation for what derailed a This is a man whose political career is not over. A man can come away worse than that and be back in three years, wiser. But that sort of loss has weight. The kind you grieve, learn from, and carry with you. What Poilievre got was weightless, and worse. He was going to be prime minister. The prize was on the table. And then it wasn’t. So what could he do? Recalibration. Rebranding. Repositioning. Softening the edges. Talking to Peter Mansbridge and Joe Rogan. Asking to see the text of the derailed trade deal. All worthy efforts. But the lessons of marketing have taught me one hard truth (and I have conveyed this conclusion to enough clients to know exactly how it lands). Sometimes the answer is nothing. Sometimes there is no packaging, no reformulation, no clever repositioning that saves the product. Marketers aren’t magicians. Sometimes the market moves and takes the shelf with it. And that is what happened here. The market moved when a new competitor entered the marketplace, a certain Mark Carney. Presented with this new competitor, the product didn’t move. Ironically, the product had spent a fortune clearing the field for this newcomer by removing a previous competitor from the market. It’s not that the product wasn’t able to move. It just wouldn’t. There’s a difference, and this second sort is the hopeless one. It’s not the client who can’t reformulate; it’s the one who is stubbornly certain that he shouldn’t have to. The product Poilievre was selling was one of affordability and grievance at the incumbent who was getting tired. It was a good go-to-market play and people bought it. Until the incumbent left. At that same moment, Trump changed the purchase criteria to sovereignty and competence. Poilievre was reclassified And overnight the category was rewritten around Carney. Poilievre was reclassified and he became the answer to a question that nobody was asking anymore. When I say reclassified instead of outsold, I’m being more generous than J.D. Vance dismissing him as a “nonentity.” We should also consider just how robust the product was in the first place. The near-win was less a testament to Poilievre’s equity and more a testament to the exhaustion of the alternative. It’s like when the sales numbers look good but you privately know your competitor collapsed. Battered by defections and byelection losses, the embattled Conservative leader is fading from view, Susan Delacourt writes. To his credit (or cost), he did make an effort to make nice and reintroduce a friendlier version of himself. But this play always backfires when your loyalists feel the compromise, and your new buyers question the authenticity. You lose the base you had without winning the switchers you were trying to bring in. And a reformulation attempted publicly and then dropped halfway through is worse than none at all. Nothing seems to be working. Poilievre asked for more Conservatives in the Senate. Carney obliged by naming Chicoutimi’s “coach” Martel. Conservative support dropped 22 points from 2025 in this week’s byelection finishing a distant third. Which brings us back to Kundera and to the genuinely unbearable thing. It would almost be easier if Poilievre were done. Instead, he must keep turning up for a future that is receding, performing the role of Opposition that was always only a step removed from the job he has coveted throughout his entire adult life. All that accumulated conviction, carried for so long and so heavily, now weighs almost nothing.
