"Little pitchers have big ears," is a saying which almost everyone has heard, but few people can claim to have ever seen a porcelain pitcher of just that description. This odd little pitcher is included in the collection of more than 500 pitchers of Mrs. John S. Koshinsky of 211 Appleton Ave. who has carried on her hobby ever since she was a little girl and was interested in "odd shapes and anything that's different." Memories of her family and friends are easily recalled to this great-grandmother of 75 as she tells a story about each one of her collection. They vary from the first little quaint one she ever got which she held explaining, "This my sister used as a bed-side candle-holder over 55 years ago," to the most recent purchase, a slender modern pitcher from Sheffield. "I paid anywhere from ten cents to two and a half dollars for most of them," she said, "but there are three which are quite valuable," she added, pointing to the top of her cabinet in which the collection is kept. The first one she identified was a china pitcher which proudly showed its age by its numerous little cracks and stately style. "It belonged to Great-Grandma who was a descendent of Oliver Cromwell; she was Richard Cromwell's daughter, a loyalist, you know," she said. "It goes back five generations" she said with pride. The second one in this choice trio is a hand-painted cider pitcher which was decorated for her husband when they were married in 1912. "At that time we were told that every good farmer should have a cider pitcher," she explained. The third pitcher which occupied this special position on the cabinet is an early Victorian triple press which is "quite valuable." A pitcher for every purpose can be found in this odd collection including a left-handed pitcher, a lemon pitcher, and an oblong pitcher designed especially for invalids. Mrs. Koshinsky has special affection, however, for a tiny pitcher which is perfectly constructed and which she has nicknamed "the crumb." When questioned if she had a favorite she replied, "I like them all, but I'm particularly fond of Edward VIII over here," as she drew out a white pitcher with the picture of the now famous Duke of Windsor. "I got this in Canada and at that time they didn't think too highly of Edward up there, but I always liked Edward the rebel (that's what I call him)." "I had a little trouble bringing him home though. My sister wouldn't let him in the house. She and her husband made me leave him in the wood shed," she said laughing.
