Университет Гавайев в Маноа запускает масштабную модернизацию кампуса с постройкой нового здания и обновлением исторических зон

The University of Hawai'i at Mānoa (UHM) is undergoing major changes to its campus, with projects underway to renovate aging facilities, construct new academic spaces, and improve heavily traveled areas.  Recently, the university has moved forward with several modernization projects. Some included in plans are the six-year Capital Improvement Project, approved by the Board of Regents, and the Mānoa Mini Master Plan. Both plans are frameworks that fall under UHM’s larger Campus Framework and Long-Range Development Plan. Under phase two of the Mānoa Mini Master Plan, a new building is being constructed to replace the former site of Snyder Hall, which was demolished between June 4 and July 2, 2021. The yet-to-be-named five-story building will feature classrooms on its first two floors and conference and office rooms on its other 3 floors, totaling 77,575 square feet of academic space. The building is expected to be complete in fall 2027. The Mānoa Mini Master Plan also includes renovations and improvements to existing campus spaces. Historic areas such as McCarthy Mall and Paradise Palms Cafe are among those undergoing or slated for improvements. Construction on McCarthy Mall began in June 2025. The project will widen pedestrian pathways, improve lighting, add seating and integrated electric outlets, and provide more shaded areas while preserving the mall’s monkeypod trees. Paradise Palms Cafe is expected to receive an expanded entrance facing McCarthy Mall and a 75-by-70-foot photovoltaic glass canopy. The canopy is designed to give natural lighting while generating renewable energy. Construction for these plans are estimated to be completed in late 2027. The Long Range Development Plan and the Board of Regents' Capital Improvement Plan will also include a $41 million renovation of Sinclair Library. This project will turn the library into the Kūlia i ka Nuʻu Student Success Center, which is expected to be completed this year. UH News claims that “the center will enhance student experience by creating a vibrant hub of modern, comfortable spaces that will encourage students to remain on campus between classes and after hours for individual study, group study, academic advising and tutoring, other campus services and much more.” While modern developments on campus will provide convenient amenities and resources that students deserve, the current construction may prove equally inconvenient. “All the new construction sites mess with Google and Apple Maps, making it harder to plan my routes,” Winry Cigna, a senior studying mechanical engineering, said. For Cigna, construction detours have affected how she plans her class schedule. Cigna shared she has to account for longer travel times between classes to avoid being late, especially when professors have strict tardiness policies. Further, construction has also become an eyesore for many other students alike. “I miss the campus aesthetic and nature. Especially because we have one of the considered most beautiful campuses compared to a lot of other universities,” Cigna said.  “Now it's covered in metal chain link fences and tarps,” Sophomore Psychology student Jaidaa Estrada concurred. Trust between students and the university has also been a contributing factor to student experiences with construction. “I feel like they're always pushing back dates, and that probably makes trusting the university for other students a little bit harder,” Cigna said. While students have been struck by inconveniences provided by developments, they are still attuned to the prospective offers upon completion. “I’m excited to get to explore campus again though, and see what it has to offer,” said Estrada. UH understands that students want newer and accessible spaces. “Student surveys have consistently shown that students want more comfortable outdoor spaces where they can study, gather, and spend time between classes, as well as newer, modern facilities that support learning,” Moanikeʻala Nabarro from the UH Office of Communications said. These voices don't go unheard. “When the construction barriers and detours went into place last academic year, we sent emails and social media videos to explain what was happening and how students could navigate around the construction. The primary method is signage around the affected areas. We will continue to provide updates as the project progresses and conditions change,” Nabarro said. The university also recognizes the importance of quality ambiance and space not only for students but for faculty as well. “Thousands of students, faculty and staff need to move through the area every day, so construction activities have to be carefully coordinated while maintaining safe access to surrounding buildings and minimizing disruptions to campus operations,” Nabarro said. The planning also extends to preserving the natural features of the Mānoa campus. Nabarro added that the university hopes the completed projects will ultimately give students more reasons to remain on campus beyond class hours. “The iconic monkeypod trees along McCarthy Mall will remain, while walkways will be widened to more safely accommodate pedestrians and other modes of transportation. The goal is to thoughtfully enhance the outdoor spaces and natural beauty that make UH Mānoa such a special place to learn, work and gather.” The University indeed does have larger plans towards beautification and state-of-the-art projects. While the process to completion may be a hassle for some students, most can agree that a better and more up-to-date campus is worth the tarped and cinder journey.
