Newman Regional Health Medical Partners is pleased to welcome Ryan S. Lay, MD, a neurologist with The University of Kansas Health System, as the newest specialist available through telehealth services in Emporia.  Dr. Lay provides care for patients with conditions affecting the brain, nerves, and nervous system. He has extensive experience treating headaches, migraines, epilepsy, and seizure disorders. Patients can now receive expert neurology care right here at home without the need to travel long distances.  Through Newman Regional Health's telehealth program, patients come to a Newman clinic and meet with Dr. Lay using a secure video connection. A member of the care team remains with the patient during the visit, helping ensure a smooth and comfortable experience.  “We are grateful for the support of The Patterson Family Foundation and for our partnership with The University of Kansas Health System," said Cathy Pimple, CEO of Newman Regional Health. "Together, these partnerships are helping us bring more specialty care services to our community so patients can receive the expert care they need right here at home.”  Dr. Lay is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Neurology at the University of Kansas Medical Center and a neurologist and epileptologist with The University of Kansas Health System. He specializes in epilepsy and migraine care and works with patients to diagnose and manage complex neurological conditions.  After earning a bachelor's degree in biology from Iowa State University, Dr. Lay received his medical degree from the University of Iowa. He completed his neurology residency and epilepsy fellowship training at the University of Kansas School of Medicine. During his residency, he served as co-chief resident and later joined the faculty at the University of Kansas Medical Center.  Dr. Lay is board-certified in both Neurology and Epilepsy by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. He is also a member of the American Academy of Neurology and the American Epilepsy Society.  "Many patients who need neurology care have had to leave the area for appointments," said Dr. Anna Lasota, Medical Staff President at Newman Regional Health. "This service helps remove that burden. Patients can see a highly trained specialist while receiving care right here at home, saving time, reducing stress, and staying connected to their local healthcare team."  In addition to caring for patients, Dr. Lay is involved in research focused on epilepsy treatment and improving outcomes for people living with seizure disorders. He recently contributed to research examining long-term outcomes for patients receiving responsive neurostimulation therapy for drug-resistant epilepsy.  Outside of medicine, Dr. Lay enjoys rock climbing, hiking, traveling, and listening to audiobooks.  The addition of neurology services is part of Newman Regional Health's ongoing effort to expand access to specialty care in Emporia and the surrounding region. Through telehealth partnerships, patients can receive advanced care from leading specialists while receiving care right here at home and staying connected to the people who matter most.
