BENNINGTON — Travelers driving east from New York state will no longer have to guess where to turn to visit historic Bennington, Vermont. The town and the Better Bennington Corporation are cooperating to lease a billboard off Route 7 in Hoosick, New York, that promotes Bennington and tells motorists they are exactly 1.65 miles from the correct exit. “While folks are used to seeing billboards advertising Manchester on the approach to Route 279, it’s nice to see Bennington getting highlighted this season,” town Communications Coordinator Jonah Spivak said Monday, referencing a billboard from the Manchester Designer Outlets. “While not everyone loves billboards, we want to take a diverse approach to marketing Bennington, which means trying different things at different times. This particular effort represents a nice collaboration between the town and the BBC and is in direct response to requests from some downtown merchants for just such an effort.” The billboard is located on the left side of Route 7 as drivers are headed toward Vermont, just east of the Countryside woodworking business. It has been leased from June 29 through August 23, and again from September 28 through October 18. Spivak has said there will be an opportunity for a design change in the billboard art for the September-October timeframe, which could also be extended depending on possible donations. The cost to lease the billboard space is $1,200 per month, he said. Donations are being accepted for the advertising project. The billboard promotion is aimed at travelers before they reach Route 279 in Vermont, when they have the option of exiting toward Bennington or continuing north on Route 7 toward Manchester. Billboards in the same area of Hoosick advertise the Manchester Designer Outlets.
