Житель Хиллсборо арестован за побег с места ДТП и укус полицейского

A Hillsboro man previously convicted of burglary was arrested Friday after allegedly fleeing the scene of a Southeast Decatur traffic accident and later biting an officer while in custody. Morgan County jail records show Corey Cordell Simpson, 46, was charged with second-degree assault of a police officer, driving under the influence, resisting arrest, driving while his license was suspended, revoked or canceled, and possessing an open container of alcohol in a vehicle. He was being held Tuesday in lieu of bonds totaling $16,900. Shortly after 4 p.m. Friday, Decatur police responded to a be-on-the-lookout alert for a potentially intoxicated driver in the 1800 block of Sixth Avenue Southeast. Police located the vehicle at the intersection of Sixth Avenue Southeast and 14th Street and identified Simpson as the driver. He had been involved in a crash, according to a police affidavit. Simpson then allegedly attempted to flee by driving away. Officers stopped him and asked him to get out of the vehicle. Police believed Simpson was intoxicated, but he refused to perform standardized field sobriety tests, the affidavit said. Officers handcuffed Simpson and placed him in a patrol vehicle. “Once Corey was placed inside the unit, officers attempted to adjust him,” the affidavit said. “When attempting to adjust Corey in the seat, Corey then bit (an officer) in the right shoulder.” Simpson also faces charges stemming from a June 2024 arrest. Court records show he was indicted in August 2025 on two counts of felony DUI, resisting arrest, driving while revoked and improper lane usage. He pleaded not guilty in June 2026, and his jury trial is scheduled for October in Circuit Judge Jennifer Howell’s court. Simpson previously pleaded guilty in August 2002 to second-degree burglary and was sentenced to 15 years in prison, with credit for 10 months and seven days already served. The 15-year sentence was imposed under Alabama’s Habitual Felony Offender Act because Simpson had two prior felony convictions. Court records show those Lawrence County convictions were for first-degree theft in 1998 and breaking and entering a vehicle in 1999. According to the arrest affidavit in the burglary case, Simpson and another man pushed their way into an occupied apartment on Tammy Street Southwest shortly after 11 p.m. Oct. 1, 2001, after first knocking on the door. Simpson allegedly struck one of the occupants in the head with a pistol before he and the other man assaulted the victim. An arrest warrant charging Simpson with first-degree burglary was issued four days later with bond set at $20,000. The warrant was executed Oct. 16, 2001. Simpson later pleaded guilty to the lesser offense of second-degree burglary as part of a negotiated plea agreement.
