Хирург из Гуама Брэндон Лопес прошел резидентуру в Хьюстоне и планирует вернуться на родину

Raised in Tamuning and a Harvest Christian Academy Class of 2018 graduate, Brandon Lopez recently matched into general surgery at Houston Methodist after attending the University of Texas Medical Branch John Sealy School of Medicine. His story is one of purpose and a vision to one day give back to Guam. “Surgery, to me, felt like the highest form of medicine as an art form. The ability to train my hands to perform a highly technical and complex service for my patients felt like a life-long journey of self-actualization and fulfillment," he said when reflecting on why he chose surgery. He was drawn to the immediate impact of the field, adding, “It’s one of the few fields where you can directly see the impact of your work in real time.” For Lopez, surgery brought together everything he valued most in medicine: “From hands-on operating, to building relationships with patients in clinic, to managing complex medical problems in the hospital… that combination of technical skill, critical thinking, and continuity of care made it feel like the right fit for me.” Match Day became even more meaningful through the couples match, where he and his fiancée, Karen Rojas, both matched at Houston Methodist. “I felt overwhelmed with gratitude. Matching at Houston Methodist, especially through the couples match, made the moment even more meaningful," Lopez said. He added, “The couples match is notoriously difficult, especially for competitive specialties like surgery and radiology. It’s an honor to say that we matched at the #1 hospital in Texas.” His passion for surgery was shaped long before medical school. “I had the opportunity to shadow surgeons on Guam throughout high school and college, which gave me early exposure to what a career in surgery really looks like," Lopez said. One of the most meaningful moments of his journey came when he returned home and scrubbed into cases with his father, Dr. Gilbert Lopez, who has served as an anesthesiologist at Guam Memorial Hospital for over 24 years. “Being in the OR with him, alongside surgeons I had once shadowed as a student, felt like a full-circle moment," he said. Looking ahead, his long-term goal remains rooted in home. “My long-term goal is to return to Guam and help strengthen surgical access for the island and surrounding Pacific communities," Lopez said. He hopes to contribute through clinical care, infrastructure, training, and workforce development, while pursuing fellowship training in minimally invasive surgery so he can bring advanced surgical care back to the region. “I am incredibly grateful for my best friend and fiancée, family, mentors, and the Guam community who supported me throughout this journey. Their belief in me played a major role in helping me get to this point. I also want to thank the Chålan Åmte community for creating a space that uplifts and connects people with similar goals. Being part of that network has been both motivating and grounding, and I’m excited to continue contributing to it moving forward," he said. More from this section
