В Аризоне запустили платформу для упрощения использования средств образовательных счетов

As thousands of Arizona families begin a new school year using Empowerment Scholarship Account funds to pay for tuition, curriculum and school supplies, a pair of former microschool leaders hopes a new financial technology platform will eliminate one of the program’s biggest frustrations: navigating the reimbursement process. Pathfinder, a Phoenix-based financial technology company co-founded by former microschool operators Amaan Ahmad and Sidharth Jain, recently launched a platform designed to help Arizona ESA families determine whether purchases qualify under state guidelines while reducing the need to pay educational expenses out of pocket and wait for reimbursement. The platform combines a Visa charge card with a mobile app that helps families identify eligible purchases, organize required documentation and manage ESA spending in one place. “Our goal is to remove the guesswork, paperwork and stress from parents’ experience of school choice,” Ahmad said. “Arizona has always been a school choice leader, and we wanted to make sure parents can focus on their child’s learning journey rather than tracking receipts.” Ahmad said his interest in improving educational options began with his own experience growing up in the United Kingdom. Although he excelled academically, Ahmad said he became disengaged in a traditional public school environment and eventually skipped classes for nearly two years before his parents discovered what had happened. After earning a scholarship to another school that better matched his needs, he said he realized the impact educational choice could have on a student’s success. That experience eventually led him and Jain to open a microschool before moving to Arizona, where they encountered the state’s ESA program while visiting alternative education models across the state. “Arizona is very much the vanguard,” Ahmad said. “It was the first state to introduce universal school choice, and it has one of the most authentic programs in terms of enabling choice for families.” The Arizona ESA program allows eligible families to use state education dollars for approved educational expenses, including private school tuition, tutoring, curriculum, therapies and other educational services. While participation has grown rapidly, Ahmad said many families continue to struggle with determining which purchases qualify and managing reimbursement paperwork. “The main first problem was what is allowable and what’s not allowable,” Ahmad said. “It’s not transparent.” He said parents often spend hours reviewing the state’s guidance manual or worrying whether a purchase could later be denied. According to Ahmad, Pathfinder’s app allows families to search for products, scan barcodes, upload photos or paste online shopping links to receive guidance about whether an item is likely to qualify for ESA reimbursement. Families can use that feature at no cost before applying for the Pathfinder charge card. Once approved, families can use the charge card to pay for qualifying educational purchases instead of using personal funds while waiting for reimbursement from the state. “There are a lot of parents who don’t have the financial means to pay out of pocket and then get reimbursed,” Ahmad said. The platform also stores receipts, prepares documentation needed for reimbursement requests and offers customer support from Arizona parents who also use the ESA program. Ahmad estimates some families currently spend one to three hours each week organizing receipts and completing reimbursement paperwork. “One of our main metrics that we hold ourselves to is how much time we are saving parents,” he said. “The ideal experience is that a parent can focus on the actual education rather than being a compliance officer or accountant trying to manage the funds.” Another feature Pathfinder promotes is what Ahmad describes as a purchase guarantee. If the company’s approval tool determines a purchase qualifies for ESA funding but the Arizona Department of Education later rules otherwise, Pathfinder says it will cover the cost rather than requiring the family to repay the state. “We provide parents a guarantee,” Ahmad said. “If we said it was allowable and, for whatever reason, it’s not allowed, we cover the cost for the parent.” The Pathfinder charge card carries no annual fee or interest because it functions as a charge card rather than a traditional credit card, Ahmad said. The company generates revenue through interchange fees paid by merchants when customers use the card. Since launching, Ahmad said thousands of Arizona ESA families have already used the app, with adoption growing primarily through word of mouth. “The thing that’s constantly shared is that it’s saving them an immense amount of time, removing a lot of uncertainty and financial risk,” Ahmad said. “The fact that it doesn’t have to come out of their personal funds is incredibly liberating.” Although Pathfinder is currently available only to Arizona ESA participants, Ahmad said the company plans to expand into other states that have education savings account programs after establishing itself in Arizona. “We’re starting here because Arizona has been a leader in school choice,” he said. “The goal is to provide this in every state that offers families these options.”
