В музее Краффорд-каунти расскажут о загадочном «отшельнике», связанном с Дж. У. Буттом и Джоном Брауном

A legendary area resident and his connections to two of America’s most notorious historical figures will be explored during a special presentation at the Crawford County Historical Museum. Local historian Greg Parrott will present “The Hermit of the Wabash: Associated with John Wilkes Booth and John Brown” at the museum on South Cross at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 27. The Hermit lived in “Solitude,” his cabin on the Indiana bank of the Wabash River at its confluence with Turman Creek from 1885 to circa 1910. A poet and philosopher, he was known as Capt. Roland Smythe, late of the Confederate Army. In truth, he was Col. Robert Alexander Caskie of Virginia, a former Southern cavalry officer and liaison officer under generals Lee, Jackson and Stuart. He died in 1928 at the age of 98. For more information about the presentation, call 618-562-9466.
