International ‘South Park’ Fans Mourn The Passing Of Brazilian-Portuguese Randy
The worldwide federation of South Park fans just lost a beloved patriarca.
Yesterday afternoon, the country of Brazil suffered a crushing loss in the FIFA World Cup Round of 16 to an underdog Norwegian squad, but the disappointing defeat of the Brazilian soccer team unfortunately overshadowed another grave loss in the country’s culture. Brazilian artist, musician and voice actor Alexandre Corrêa, who served as the star of numerous cartoon localizations in the country, passed away at the age of 72, as reported late last week.
Don't Miss
Among his other impressive credits – Cyborg in the Brazilian-Portuguese dub of Teen Titans, Martian Manhunter in the Brazilian-Portuguese dub of Justice League – Corrêa most notably played the role of Randy Marsh on the Brazilian-Portuguese dub of South Park for 20 seasons. According to the Brazilian South Park followers who grew up with Corrêa's performance of the series' de facto main character, South Park without Corrêa is like Lorde without a woman's bathroom.
When news of Corrêa's broke on the South Park subreddit, Brazilian fans had to explain to a community that has mostly known nothing but Trey Parker for the past 27 seasons how, down in São Paulo, Corrêa isn't just the biggest star in the Brazilian localization of South Park – he is the Brazilian localization of South Park.
“He was one of the pillars of South Park's portuguese dub,” one fan wrote.
“You guys have no idea about how perfect was his Randy's voice," another added of Corrêa, "He was a really talented voice actor.”
A Brazilian viewer explained, “Randy is so beloved not just because he was well written in the original but also cause of Correa's delivery of the translated lines. Many Brazilian people that know South Park can almost always acknowledge his lines in Portuguese, probably more than Cartman's.”
One fan simply lamented, "This is a sad day for Brazilian fans of Lorde."
Since South Park first became a sensation among American animation fans in 1997, the show has expanded into dozens of foreign markets, with close to twenty unique South Park voice casts performing for fans in their own language worldwide. Interestingly, Brazil was one of the first foreign adopters of South Park – the Brazilian-Portuguese dub first hit the airwaves in 1998.
Corrêa did not take over the role of Randy on Brazilian-Portuguese South Park until Season 7, but, according to the die-hard South Park fans in the Southern Hemisphere, Corrêa is a massive reason why South Park has had such staying power in Brazil. Corrêa retired from the role before dubbing of the most recent South Park season, which unfortunately means that the last South Park episode that Corrêa recorded was likely the one where Randy partied with a parody of Andrew Tate.
Nevertheless, the memory of Corrêa's powerhouse performances will live on in the hearts of Brazilian-Portuguese speakers everywhere. So, for him, we say, “Desculpe, achei que aqui fosse o Brasil!”
