В Чикаго открылись выставки Джеффа Картера, Пьера Бизмуа и коллектива teamLab

Hyde Park Art Center 5020 S. Cornell Ave. Chicago artist Jeff Carter’s “The Singer Pavilion Project” is on view through Sept. 20. The exhibition includes 11 works focused on the Singer Pavilion, a former psychiatric institute that operated from 1948 to 2009 and is now the last surviving building from the former Michael Reese Hospital complex in Bronzeville. Designed in collaboration with Walter Gropius, founder of the Bauhaus school, the pavilion remained after most of the sprawling hospital campus was demolished following Michael Reese’s 2009 closure. Carter has been visiting and researching the site since 2020. Several works incorporate objects and materials he collected there, including a waiting-room chair, vinyl records and plants that had overtaken the abandoned property. Working across sculpture, digital imagery, sound and installation, Carter considers what became of the social ideals embodied in the hospital’s Modernist architecture and what the abandoned site reveals about the institution that occupied it. This year’s teen exhibition, “OFF THE WALL!,” runs through Oct. 11 in Gallery 5 and presents work by 29 artists from the Hyde Park Art Center’s Teen Programs. Curated by Harley Reid and Tran Tran, the show grew out of conversations among participating teens about coming of age amid political and economic uncertainty. The Art Center describes the exhibition as both a celebration of the young artists’ individual voices and a call for change, with work intended to challenge expectations placed on young people. “Ground Floor 2026,” on view through Nov. 1, is the ninth installment of the Art Center’s biennial exhibition series, which began in 2010. It brings together work by 20 artists who graduated in 2025 or 2026 from five Chicago MFA programs: Northwestern University, the University of Chicago, the University of Illinois Chicago, the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and Columbia College Chicago. The exhibition, spread across much of the Art Center’s lower level, is intended to take stock of emerging conceptual and stylistic trends among a new generation of Chicago artists. Renaissance Society 5811 S. Ellis Ave. The Renaissance Society will present "Karimah Ashadu: Tendered," a solo exhibition by the award-winning British-Nigerian artist from Sept. 12 through Nov. 1. The exhibition marks the U.S. debut of Ashadu’s “MUSCLE,” a new moving-image installation following bodybuilders training in the slums of Lagos. The 22-minute film is accompanied at the Renaissance Society by new sculptural works drawn from the environments depicted onscreen. Ashadu intentionally composed her shots to be very close to the bodybuilders’ bodies, she explained in a video interview with the Camden Art Centre, because she wanted “to play around with proximity in the sense of you being drawn into the work, but at the same time, feeling repelled and having that tension within you when you’re seeing the work, almost wanting to look away, but something keeps you there.” The exhibition is also presented in conjunction with Ashadu’s “Machine Boys,” which will be installed at the Art Institute of Chicago beginning Sept. 11. Ashadu, who works between Hamburg and Lagos, won the Silver Lion for a Promising Young Participant at the 2024 Venice Biennale. Her films frequently examine labor, masculinity and informal economies in Nigeria. “My work really deals with themes of patriarchy, labor, within a very specific context of Nigeria, where I’m from,” Ashadu said. “‘MUSCLE’ brings a lot of the themes of my practice together: motions of labor, globalism, and capitalism, you know, the brands, and then also the physicality of the body.” “Tendered” is curated by Alessandro Rabottini and Leonardo Bigazzi of Fondazione In Between Art Film with the Renaissance Society’s Myriam Ben Salah and Karsten Lund. An opening celebration is scheduled from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Sept. 12. Neubauer Collegium for Culture and Society 5701 S. Woodlawn Ave. The Neubauer Collegium for Culture and Society will open “Pierre Bismuth: Love Bless America” on Sept. 26, bringing new work by the French artist and filmmaker to the gallery through Jan. 8, 2027. Bismuth shared the 2005 Academy Award for best original screenplay for “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind,” receiving story credit alongside Charlie Kaufman and Michel Gondry. The exhibition is curated by Dieter Roelstraete, with an opening reception at 2 p.m. Sept. 26. At the center of “Love Bless America” is a long-form meditative film following Chicago musicians Joshua Abrams and Sharon Udoh as they compose a 21st-century spiritual from a hymn written by Bismuth. The project uses the traditions of religious music to explore inspiration, love, music and the divine. Bismuth will also show a series of digital images resembling American flags emblazoned with lyrics from the hymn. Smart Museum of Art 5550 S. Greenwood Ave. The Smart Museum of Art will reopen Sept. 22 with “teamLab: Everything Exists in Infinite Continuity,” the first Midwest exhibition by the Tokyo-based collective known for immersive digital environments that respond to their viewers. Running through Feb. 21, 2027, the survey traces 25 years of teamLab’s work, from early computer-generated pieces displayed on monitors to large-scale interactive installations and new works created for the Smart. Founded by Toshiyuki Inoko in 2001, teamLab brings together artists, programmers, engineers, animators, mathematicians, architects and other specialists. Its installations use digital technology to explore perception and the relationship between the individual and the surrounding world, often dissolving the conventional boundary between the viewer and the artwork. Among the works is the North American premiere of “Massless Suns and Dark Suns,” an interactive environment of glowing spheres that appear to exist without physical boundaries. Other new works include “The World of Irreversible Change,” which is synchronized with Chicago’s weather and seasons so that rain, sunlight and the passage of time outside the museum alter the digital environment inside. In an interview with artguide, Inoko explained the exhibition’s name: “What is existence? Existence arises not only as self-containing objects, but within an environment, and formed by perception. We are not looking at the world from the outside but as part of a continuity, and from within that continuity, we perceive existence. Everything exists in a long borderless continuity.”
