Wilmington hires dog control officer through Dec. 31, filling position vacant since July

WILMINGTON — The Wilmington town board voted at an emergency meeting on Thursday to hire a dog control officer, a role that had been vacant since July. “Finding someone to take the job has been a problem,” town Supervisor Tim Follos said. “We’d advertised the position and got little response.” So when the neighboring town of Jay’s primary dog control officer, Dan McDonald, expressed interest — at least for the remainder of the calendar year — Follos said the town board wanted to move quickly with the hire, especially with Labor Day weekend bringing an influx of activity to the community. “Obviously, it’s a small chance that there’d be some emergency where we would need a dog control officer, but there’s a chance so let’s just take care of this,” he said. “He’s up to speed. He can step right into the job.” The offer was a flat rate of $2,000 for the rest of the year, plus the relatively minor costs of a town-owned phone so people can readily contact McDonald in an emergency. Follos estimated that to be about $30 per month. It was noted that routing his phone through the Jay town hall, as is currently the case, isn’t as reliable. McDonald will continue working as Jay’s primary dog control officer throughout this temporary employment. The board approved it 3-0, with council members Hanna Cromie and Darin Forbes absent from the meeting. Forbes said he was supportive of the hire and terms, but felt it could have waited until the Sept. 8 regular meeting. The contract runs through Dec. 31, and Follos said McDonald indicated he doesn’t want the position long-term. The town board will spend the rest of the year continuing to search for a permanent hire, Follos said, adding that he was grateful to have the position filled for now. “Like a lot of these things, it’s not a problem until it becomes a giant problem,” he said. “And you never know when it is going to be a giant problem. I think the whole board felt that it had gone on too long without someone in this job.”
