В библиотеке Картажа появились две книги с мемуарами покойного уроженца города Линна Траута

The Carthage Public Library welcomes two copies of “Son of the Prairie,” written by Lynn Troute, to its shelves. The books, printed posthumously, portray Troute’s life growing up in Carthage as a youth and of his days at Carthage College. Be prepared to laugh at Tom Sawyer-esque stories of hunting, fishing and mushroom hunting around Carthage and on the Mississippi River. A few of the most notable ones when Troute was a boy are “Uncle Lee’s Pigeon Problem,” “Uncle Brick and Boy Lost” and “The Best of Times and The Worst of Times.” As an adult, it is fair to say his worst hunting experience is encapsulated in the story, “Afternoon From Hell.” Lynn Troute was the son of Carl and Dorothy Troute, who ran a dry cleaning business on the north side of the Carthage square. He had an older brother, Rex. Lynn was an outstanding basketball player for the Blueboys and went on to play basketball and baseball for Carthage College. His bachelor’s degree from Carthage College was in education and he attained a master’s degree from Illinois State University. After graduation, Troute taught and coached boys basketball, first at Dallas City High School and then in the Petersburg School District. Later on he would go to work for the Illinois State Board of Education, where he worked from 1971 until his retirement in 1992. His main job was as the principal consultant of guidance and counseling for the Department of Vocational and Technical Education. Nature was Troute’s passion, with hunting and fishing leading the way in a great many of his stories in the “Son of the Prairie.” He was an accomplished trap shooter winning many titles in many states. Troute’s nickname, Dr. Duck, came from a sideline business where he sold Illinois State deer and turkey pins, federal and state duck prints and stamps, along with other wildlife items. Troute died on Jan. 13, in Surprise, Arizona, where he shared a home with his wife of 46 years, Karen. He was survived by his daughters, Lisa C. Seitzer and Stacia A. Saporta, along with five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Lynn was buried in the family plot at the Carthage Cemetery. If you the reader knew Lynn, you will swear he is telling you these stories in person. If you don’t know Mr. Troute, you will laugh just the same.
