Retired Clerk of Court honored with Distinguished Service Award
William “Will” Magill of Greeneville, the recently retired Clerk of Court for the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Eastern District of Tennessee, was recently honored with the Distinguished Service Award at the National Conference of Bankruptcy Clerks annual conference in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
The award, which was presented Aug. 20, recognizes retiring, long-time members of the NCBC and/or federal service that have had a positive impact or made a substantial contribution to the bankruptcy community, according to a press release.
Magill joined NCBC in 2005 and is a lifetime member.
Magill worked in the Bankruptcy Court in the federal courthouse in Greeneville for almost three decades before retiring in January.
He invested his time and resources to ensure employees learned and benefitted from NCBC’s many programs, believing that collaborating with peers and building networks strengthened both the individual and the federal court system, the press release states.
Former staff members of Magill at the Bankruptcy Court nominated him for the award because he exemplified the qualities of a public servant and leader, the press release said.
He demonstrated those qualities “with unwavering professionalism, devotion and integrity,” the release states.
“Throughout his many years of service, Will readily mentored new clerks, both locally and nationally, passing on invaluable skills and institutional knowledge without desire for recognition or reward,” according to the press release.
Magill served as the Bankruptcy Clerk’s Advisory Group representative for the Sixth Circuit from 2019-2022; served on the district’s Civics Outreach Committee; and served as Clerk of the Bankruptcy Court from 2015 until his retirement earlier this year.
The press release states that Magill “faithfully and conscientiously ensured that the work of the U.S. Bankruptcy Court was performed professionally, timely, and compassionately, leaving an incredible legacy of integrity, professionalism, collaboration and humor.”
Christopher Call took over Magill’s position as Clerk of Court following his retirement in January.
The jurisdiction of the Bankruptcy Court for the Eastern District encompasses 41 of Tennessee’s 95 counties, with courthouses in Greeneville, Knoxville, Chattanooga and Winchester.
