An unfortunate circumstance led Thomas Brittain to follow his passion. Nearly two years ago Brittain lost his job in information technology and needed to figure out what to do next. His wife asked him “What do you really want to do?” Brittain said he would “love to open a hobby store or game shop.” And that is just what he’s done. The Tabletop Supply Co. opened Aug. 14 in Monroe and carries a variety of tabletop games and accessories. “The store has a wide selection of miniatures, board games and TTRPG (Tabletop Role Playing Games),” Brittain said. “We carry the Warhammer, War Machine, Bolt Action and Konflikt 47 games and accessories along with other titles.” The miniatures are used in game play and a popular hobby for players is painting the pieces before using them in a game. Players often paint the figures to match the theme of the games while others give them custom paint jobs. “We have a person who painted a set like in a Bengals theme,” Brittain said. Brittain said his store has the largest paint selection in Southwest Ohio with more than 1,000 colors. There is a segment of hobbyists who just like to collect and paint the figures of the different games, while others use them in games. In addition to the paint, Tabletop has hundreds of board games for purchase, including many mainstream titles like Ticket to Ride and Cataan and some new, more niche table top games. The most popular games are Dungeons & Dragons and Warhammer, according to Brittain. D&D was the game of choice for Brittain when he first began playing around age 13. “I started playing D&D second edition,” Brittain said. “As I got older, I played other editions. Then switched to Pathfinder and then started in Warhammer, which is a miniatures game.” Tabletop also offers space to play the games with five tables for free play where you can bring your own game or purchase one from the store. Tabletop offers two private rooms to rent for those who want to play without distraction. There is an eight-person room and a six-person room. The store is about 4,200 square feet and is open six days a week. “Right now, I’m the only employee,” Brittain said. “We’re just getting started.”
