Мария Макмахон, активистка и путешественница, скончалась в возрасте 91 года

For much of her life, Mary McMahon, who died May 15 at age 91, sought to understand the people and world around her. Whether listening to psychotherapy patients, discussing world affairs with friends, supporting those affected by war, or attending protests well into her 90s, McMahon approached life with curiosity, compassion and conviction. "She was kind of intense and a great listener," said her daughter, Kathleen McMahon. "She was very compassionate about both individuals in her life and global issues." Those interests were rooted in a childhood unlike most. The daughter of Presbyterian medical missionaries, McMahon spent portions of her youth in China and Cameroon, experiences that helped shape a lifelong concern for people beyond her immediate surroundings. Kathleen said her mother carried that international perspective throughout her life, whether discussing world affairs at the dinner table or following conflicts overseas. "She would say things like, 'Finish your dinner. There's starving children in China,'" Kathleen said. That perspective later informed her humanitarian work. Kathleen recalled her mother's deep concern for victims of war crimes in Bosnia and said she traveled there to provide volunteer therapy services. While global issues remained important to her throughout her life, McMahon also found joy through travel, music and lifelong learning. Kathleen remembers a trip to Italy during her mother's 40s as a turning point. “I remember just thinking my mother had gotten her spunk back,” Kathleen said. During a weekslong trip to Italy with a friend, McMahon immersed herself in the country's culture, art and music. "From then on out that she traveled on her own, you know, to do things that really felt were aligned with her values, in both being aware of sort of the global landscape and serving people,” Kathleen said. When Mary and her husband, Richard "Dick" McMahon, retired to Walpole in the early 1990s, they found a community that matched those interests. The couple built a home on Whipple Hill and quickly immersed themselves in local life. "They really came to love Walpole," Kathleen said. "A lot of interesting people were moving there and retiring there." McMahon joined international affairs, book and film groups and later started a play-reading group at Covenant Living in Keene. She even wrote some of the group's plays. "They really loved Walpole, and there's just so much that they sort of participated in and actually generated,” Kathleen said. Music, reading and activism remained central to McMahon's life well into her later years. Kathleen said her mother continued attending concerts, reading widely and staying engaged with issues she cared about. "She was a true activist," Kathleen said. Even in her 90s, she remained committed to causes she believed in and was "still marching in Keene months before her death." That commitment often meant pushing through physical limitations. Kathleen recalled that her mother "wasn't going to let her lack of balance or poor eyesight stop her from going to a protest." For all her accomplishments and interests, however, what Kathleen said she'll miss most is something simpler. "She was just a great companion," Kathleen said. "She was always reading fiction, nonfiction, The New York Times, the book review. She was just such a great companion to talk about ideas with."
